You are funny, LadyRags!!

If you find your way back into this forum thread, I want you to know that the "floating borders" are the magic that is making all the different borders of our BOMs fit together! Try it, you'll like it!!

I have been looking for pictures of the quilt block you are talking about and can not find the link.... What the heck is a floating border? It sounds interesting.

This is like being at work and walking into the tail end of a conversation. I can't figure out what you guys are talking about.

Duh... looking at the title of the thread... BLOCK OF THE MONTH... I can be so dumb...

Sandi, don't worry about it! All of the borders can be different widths and it will look just fine, and next month's floaters will take care of the discrepancies!

I'm confused. I don't see a formula in the instructions on how to make the last floating border. It says to make it 1 1/4 by length of quilt. I had to make the inner floater 1 3/4 because my size was off on the 4 patch borders. Will it look a bit strange having the outer floater smaller than the inner? My size is still a bit off. Sue's instructions say after adding the 4 patch border the quilt should measure 29 square. Mine measures 29 1/2-29 3/4. What should I do? Sandi in FL

Hi Ladies, I am new to this, as well as posting, so I hope I am doing it right . . . .

I have just added my four-patch borders and am ready to put on the last floating border, but my center measures 28" and not the 29" it should. In order to end the month at 30 1/2" unfinished, should I make my last floaters 2 1/4" wide and not 1 1/4" wide as directed?

Please help!!! Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum, Jasper 64! I'm sorry I didn't catch you post earlier, but want to add that you can make up the difference either way. You can make the last borders wide enough to finish February at 30-1/2" or you can make the first floater next month wider to make up the difference.
If you will go to the Show & Tell page and check the first entries for "finished BOMs", you will see that Sue's borders (the first entry) surrounding her pinwheel border are significantly different from what my borders (the third entry) are.

All of our quilts will look different, and that's OK!! We are all making works of art.

BTW...if you haven't found it yet, I have posted some tutorials with photos and captions showing how I made my BOM when I tested the pattern for Sue. You might find some helpful tips. What I did is obviously not the ONLY way to make the BOM, but it's what worked for me.

You can click here to connect to it, and it's always available on my profile. Just click my smiling face anywhere you see it on TQS!

Frances - DO watch Margo's video on making the four-patch sides. It is wonderful!!! I will use these tips for my second set - I am making two different versions! I wish I had checked her video first!

Enjoy! Thanks for the reply.

Karen,
That is my understanding about the floater. You make it however wide it needs to be so the finished block is the correct size. I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm planning on starting my four patches today.
