TOPIC: August Block of the Month

03 Aug 2008 06:03 #23326

Sue challenged us last month with the teeny circles, and we all came up with different ways of getting the job done. This month the challenge is that baby's breath!

Maggie in E. Central Illinois, where it is in the 60s now, and promising to be not too bad of a day. Now tomorrow.....

Really made progress today and then when I put the vase and large leaves in place, I wasn't sure I was happy with my choice so now it sits until I can look at it with fresh eyes. The stems for the baby's breath will definately not be fabric!

As I was looking at the August block pattern, I was so happy I had not done the July block yet. You see, I decided to change my colors for the August block to the July block colors I had chosen. I just finished getting all the pieces ironed down and I'm ready to start satin stitching. I think I'll have to wait for the cooler morning temperatures; 82 indoors is just too warm for my comfort level. I'm really enjoying this project.

Well Lynn I carry the pearls in my change purse because I never think about it when I'm home. Someone dear gave me a small bracelet of fresh water pearls and it broke and I went scampering all over the floor during church looking for the pearls. The safest place I could think of to put them was my change purse.

Thanks, Margo, I posted yesterday that I had finally decided to do the BOMs and had bought my background fabric and made my overlay and traced the freezer paper patterns for Jan. I reread your tutorial this morning on starting with the stars etc. Thanks so much for refreshing my memory. Judy in HOT AZ

Judy, because there is still no place special on the web site for us to post them, you can only see the first 12 together in my Member Blogs. Just go to the Member Blogs page and click on one of my profile pictures, then click "SEW LONG!" and scroll down to see the titles of past blogs looking for THE FIRST 12 BOMs of each month. If you want to see ALL of the posted block, you can go to my Webshots album. They are grouped by the month, and it's a LOT of fun to see them all together!! You can always access that web site from my profile page.

Yes, it's hot in Houston and am happy to be working on August block. Although the garden still demands at least a little water and I don't have an automatic system, so it requires I walk around and talk to my plants now and then to apraise their water needs. By then I'm sweating and ready to go inside!

Well, Lynn, I found a great product for you -- I put one in myself this spring. It's called the "Simple Soaker" and it took 20 minutes to install and now all I have to do is hook up the hose, turn it on, and it waters my garden while I quilt!

I got all my pieces cut yesterday and I'm ready to glue down the edges! And I'm not attempting the baby's breath stems in fabric -- maybe some bobbin work? I'll have to play with that.

I have my vase fabric - as usual a bright print for center - and polka dots for rest of vase.

Also considering doing a machine stitch for the bb stems....those tiny stems don't give me alot of satisfaction. ha

Happy sewing ladies!
Lynn

PS: You ladies with the pears in your purses - I don't know what to say about that, :D except it's very strange for 2 of you to be doing it. :?: :? :o

First thing this morning I printed out the pattern but I spent more than half the day catching up on everything I've missed on TQS. Shortly, I'll go choose my fabrics and tonight I should be able to trace the pattern. This looks to be a bit less tedious than some previous months. :D

I printed out August BOM, taped, did my overlay, and drew my frezer paper templates. They are half cut out, then to select the fabrics, and go from there. It is a lovely block Thanks Sue. I do needle turn, and will do French knots. My vase will be the same fabric as the rest of them.

So happy that it's finally the first of August!! I have my star applique ready and will machine stitch it on tomorrow. I had the fabrics chosen beforehand so I was ready to go! Beads are a good idea, but I like doing french knots anyway so don't know which at this point. I found a pretty vase insert in my stash. I plan to zig zag the brown stems for the baby's breath...they are too, too tiny for me to manipulate.

The only trouble with getting going on the month's block so early is that it seems a very long time before the next one is available!!

:D Patti!
Mine are in my purse too!(that is so weird!) They are in a little tube...I just can't bring myself to put them in a "safe place", because I know that I will forget where that "safe place" is when I need to use pearls!! (55 year old brain cells LOL! Besides, it's fun just to play with 'em)

Oh wow thanks for the fresh water pearls suggestion! I have been carrying around in my change purse some little teenie fresh water pearls that are very sentimental to me and fall on the floor everytime I go for change. This would be a perfect home for them! :D
