TOPIC: Fabric Requirements

Re: Fabric Requirements 05 Jan 2012 16:32 #73188

Hello one and all

I did email Sarah querying the 6yard required for the main background colour, thinking some of this might be for backing. Sarah kindly replied to say that the whole amount will be used setting the top of the quilt - the four large appliqued corners will each require 44" squares, so I'm presuming there will be a join for those of us who buy 42" wide fabric. Hope this helps

does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to Ricky Tims' Poly Stable Stuff for the piecing? at 6 packs at $12 +shipping, that's already almost $80 before buying fabric :(

It's more economical by the yard: http://www.rickytims.com/online-store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=64&category_id=26

The 8-1/2" x 11" pre-cut sheets are $9.98: http://www.rickytims.com/online-store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=65&category_id=26

I was planning on using Carol Doak's foundation paper. 100 sheets 8 1/2" x 11" costs around $10. Can't afford Ricky's cool stuff, but with a quilt as beautiful as this one, I won't mind tearing all that paper!

Hey Frank! I hope you saw that I updated the info. After doing the math, I realized that the cost is about the same for the pre-cut sheets and the yardage.
Can't wait to see what you do with the pattern, no matter what foundation product you use! Hugs....

Those circular arcs also take quite a bit of fabric. :)

I also questioned the large amount of fabric and Sarah said it was right, there is a lot of applique so it has double thicknesses.

I just got this e-mail from Lilo:

Hi Margo,

I just got back in town and found your email. The fabrics are from PB Textiles and Red Rooster.

Fizz is with P&B
Buttons & Blooms is with Red Rooster.

If the members look through the introduction there is a listing of fabric color and code from each company.

Hope that helps.

Michelle, you can always contact The Quilt Show Shoppe direct by going to the purple tool bar. Use Help, contact us, customer service non technical. I have always found them very helpful. Please be sure to post any reply for the rest of us to see :-)

Thanks Margo! You are always in the know!!

I compared the swatches from P and B and noticed that the "F" (fushia?) and the "T" (Turquiose?) and not shown as current colors in this line. Will the Quilt Shoppe be using those? Both these fabrics need 3+ yards so they are very important to the look!!

Sarah probably has this all handled...

I am trying to find the fabric line FIZZ which is used in the new BOM. Does anyone have a link to it online? Or who it is made by? Where do we buy it, besides the Quilt Show Shoppe?

Sarah's into just says FIZZ and lists only a simple code next to the colors on the swatch chart. For instance, V next to the purple, so I assume that is for Violet. I'd like to know the exact color names or numbers...

Thanks!!

My guess is that you would just need Stable Stuff for the applique and embroidery sections. For regular paper piecing you could use less expensive foundation paper. That's what I would do if I were making the quilt. Also foundation paper is much easier to tear away if you don't want something that can be left in the quilt. That said, if I were to use all Stable Stuff I would purchase it over a period of time instead of all at once. There is also a product called Fun-Dation that I have used in the past. It's not quite as thick as Stable Stuff but is more expensive unless you can find it on sale. My favorite is still Office Depot's translucent vellum paper Item 345-854. I've been using it for over a year and it's about half the price. I just finished a mini border on my 2011 BOM using the vellum and those narrow 1/4" strips of paper stayed in place until the border was added to the quilt and were easy to tear away.

Re: Fabric Requirements 08 Dec 2011 22:58 #72033

Maree FYI I think the BOM for last year 2010 was about the same amount of fabric 24 yards, we had 10 1/2 yards of the white alone, I think this years one 2011 was a bit less, someone may correct me on this.

Hi, I posted a couple of days ago but haven't heard back yet. Has anyone checked the yardage for this quilt, It seems a lot of fabric for one quilt, I added it up to about 24 yards.
I would like to start getting the fabric but not sure how much. Look forward to hearing from someone soon.
Maree

Maree, I am sure that Sarah has calculated the yardage correctly. This is not her first pattern and I think you will be fine just following her directions.
