TOPIC: Quilting with disabilities

13 May 2008 19:24 #18167

I know how you feel about those quilts they are so pretty. AND SOOOO expensive. I wish I could afford one too. That is why I took up quilting. Someday I want to be good enough to make one that pretty. Don't get me wrong mine are nice , but those are just amazing. I am working up my courage to make a queen size quilt. That has a more complex pattern than I have ever done. First though I have to get my courage up to do a twin size quilt done for my grand neice. I don't see that happening any time soon. I have like 6 crib and one large wall hanging quilt going right now. Everyone says that is enough for anyone. NOT ME :!: I seem to love stretching myself to the limit. Rachel

Oh, boy, I am back from my shopping trip. The very same fabric that I buy in AZ for $8.99 and up, I found for $5.99 -$6.40. I was amazed at the mark up on these fabrics. The shops around the Amish communities are run by Mennonites and they are always busy. Needless to say, I spent $$$$$$$. I didn't buy any quilts but I saw one that was crosshatched for $1500. Most of them are around $700 and up, and of course, hand stitched. I wish I could have spent more but the suitcase will only hold so much. I packed light, only 31 lbs so I would have room for my stash. :D :D :D

Judy,
Have fun!!! I love Lancaster County. It's so cool driving down the road and seeing the buggies. I have so much respect for them-they've never bowed down to technology.

Judy I noticed a difference within a day or 2. It was wonderful. Although I am not feeling too wonderful today. I over did it trying to get my Mom's quilt done this weekend. Now I can't pick up my right arm and can't feel my hands or right foot. My hubby told me to stop. I should have listened. I didn't get the quilt done and I can't even hold the needle. This sucks and my son would sya. Any way no sense complaining about it I did it to myself. Either way I take celebrex twice a day 200mg. I am also allowed to take one more if the pain gets too bad but I have to call the Dr. first and tell his staff that I am doing it first, or at least leave a message saying so. I also take the Noratryptoline at night that is for depression and pain that helps quite a bit. By the way that might not be spelled right but that is how it sounds. lots of love from doped up in Ny Rachel

Rachel,
I'm doing pretty good. As you and everybody else here knows, you just do what you have to do. I saw Tina Turner on Oprah the other day. She's 68 years old   !!!!!!!!! Dang!

Judy,
Maybe your dosage needs to be adjusted. A few mgs one way or the other can perform magic!

Rachel, how long were you taking Celebrex before you noticed any difference? I have been on it for about a month now and haven't noticed any improvement. Maybe it doesn't work for me or am I too impatient. Judy in AZ (still in York, PA ) and Happy Mothers Day to everyone out there

My Dr. put me on Celebrex the last time I was there what a difference that made. Holy cow :!: Talk about being able to move again. I still have some pain but it is nothing compared to what it was. Let's hope that your pain Eileen was just an inflamed nerve and you get some relief soon. How have you been by the way? Ann please tell me you are not travelling through where all the tornadoes are right now? Praying for all those out there in tornado and fire land Rachel

Eileen, that is great news from your dr. and glad that physical therapist showed up in your life at the right time. Life is funny that way - somtimes help comes in the most unusual ways. but that is okay, lets take it wherever we can get it. Good luck with your meds and keep us posted, Ann

Eileen, THANK THE LORD!!! :D :D :D :D I am soooo happy to hear that not only did you get the good news from that other Dr. but that PT. was there to give you some advice. I do agree it does seem strange that your symptoms are solely one sided. Perhaps that area is very enflamed. Did your Dr. offer an anti-inflamitory. If not no big deal keep up with the advil. Use whatever works. I am also happy to hear that he is willing to give you a cortisone injection. Bit of advice though afterward DON'T OVER DO IT. Remember that area is still wounded you just can't feel it as much. I truely am happpy for you see prayers are answered Rachel

Nancy,
I've been on Lyrica since last fall and have finally found a dosage that allows me to function. I take 25mg twice a day-morning and lunchtime and 150mg at night. It helps me sleep as well as lessening the pain.

Rachel,
I went to the orthopedist yesterday and he doesn't think I have RSD. Thank goodness for that! He thinks it is related to my injury, which is what triggered the FMS as well. He wants to see me in a month and if it's gotten worse, he'll give me a cortisone shot in the affected elbow. I still have the burning sensation in my forearm but Advil seems to keep that from making me crazy.
One of my customers is a PT and she watched me yesterday when she dropped off a quilt. I'm left handed so I support myself with my right arm. She noticed how I hold my arm and gave me some tips to reduce the pain.

Pat- my mom also uses the guaifenesin protocol and has had a huge improvement in her symptoms. The hardest and most important part is what you mentioned about the salicylates.
