Vicki Welsh answers this in this article. Recently a fellow guild member had the same issue, and followed her advise, and now has a 'saved' quilt.

The quilt is already pieced and I just found out that the dark red fabric will leave red spots on the light fabric when washed. (I was testing how I was going to mark the quilt for quilting)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
