TOPIC: Quilt value

Re: Quilt value 02 Feb 2014 13:37 #115106

Thank you Margo and Jeanine. I'm learning a lot from you and others. Making me realize how important it is to take photos of our quilts, both the front and back, and to have them appraised. I've been in touch with several appraisers from AQS and learning that they can do an AFTER appraisal through photos and interviews. Barb

Margo is spot on with her comment. I have several antique quilts appraised individually and have to have them reappraised after several years. I think a validation of 5 years was my max last time. As for all the other quilts, I have kept receipts and notes on their expenses just in case.

I'm not sure, but I think that unless the quilt was actually appraised by a certified appraiser BEFORE it was lost/damaged, she will probably only be re-reimbursed for actual cost of materials used, and then only if she has receipts! Items like this usually need a special rider on an insurance policy to recoup actual appraised value.
Such a shame!

I have a friend who just called. Her son's home burned and he lost 3 quilts Joyce made for him, all hand quilted. Joyce has won blue ribbons at the Illinois State Fair for her beautiful appliqués quilts, and recently did a bed turning for us at a quilt show we had in Galena. She has photos of each one and needs them appraised for the insurance. She could give a value, but thought it would be better if an appraiser was involved. Thank you for whatever direction you can provide.
