What a nice variety of Sues. I second Ritzy's suggestion. I would keep the sashing simple because of the plaid - perhaps repeating a motif like the four-leaf clover from the border or some simple curves.

I love the echo quilting option Eileen suggested.

I'm wondering if you'd need stitching on Sue. What do others do - perhaps a stitch in the ditch around her main pieces?

I think what you chose for the sashing would look great in the outside border(proportioned to size). Seems like it would be lost in the sashing.

This quilt is so adorable. You could play in the white background and quilt in some flowers, birds and sun with the white (or matching) thread. Then echo around that. This is a play quilt for me. Let it speak to you and go with it. If your worried about your quilting then match the thread. If your comfortable with your quilting then I would hard some hints of color but not overpower the characters.

Are you planning on washing it? If so, get some coloring book drawings (if you are not comfortable with drawing) and use some shapes from them. You could exaggerate the size of the shapes and then fill in with an echo or small pattern smaller than your shape. Another words a large humming bird and small swirl shapes in the background.

Have fun. The sashing idea looks good too.

Candy,
Just because the quilt is traditional, doesn't mean you have to quilt it that way. I'd do echo quilting in the blocks; it would give movement to each figure. I like the pattern you've chosen for the sashing but it won't show unless you use a contrasting thread. Feathers in the border will look great.
hope this helps,

Hi everybody (and welcome to a new year of quilting).

I was wondering if I could get some help with a Sun Bonnet Sue VERY traditional small quilt I finished and am ready to put on my long-arm.

Here's the quilt:

I will quilt the blocks with alternating clam shell and crosshatching

But I'm not sure about the sashing and border.

I'm thinking about this for the sashing:

And a feather for the border, but not sure with the prairie points.

I'd sure appreciate the input!

Thanks! Candy
