TOPIC: boarders quilted

Re: boarders quilted 24 Nov 2013 18:14 #112803

Thank you all . I did quilt the 6" boarders and left the 4" boarders around the squares so they accent the squares and make them the focal point. Now I am just binding it. I have to do it by machine since my arthritics keeps my from doing it by hand.

Yes, as others said you should quilt the boarder. One reason being that 6" is to far apart for a border as that is the part of the quilt that is usually held when pulling it up or moving it. The second and really main reason is that your boarder will ripple if it is not quilted nearly as dense as the rest of the quilt. Ever see some quilts hanging that have a rippled edge? There can be other causes but that is one of the reasons.
Hope this helps.

Wendy is right. The quilting in the borders should be the same density as the rest if the quilt.
The batting you used should also be considered. Some battings require quilting more densely than others,

That's a good size quilt, must have been hard work quilting by machine.

Is the flying geese border the same as the 6" border?

I think it depends on the batting how much quilting it needs but 6" is a big space unless there are other ditches. My choice would be to use the same amount of quilting as in the main part of the quilt. It'll look balanced and be a better shape.

Can we see it pretty please :D

I seriously re looked at my quilt and decided I needed to pop out the flying geese boarder so accented them with free motion pattern and left the solid black 4" boarders alone. It looks good so I guess now I will just square it up and bind it now.

I am finally finishing quilting my 103"by103" quilt. I have stitched in the ditch my boarders but they are 6" wide .Should I free motion in the middle of each boarder as well?
