I used a heat resistant padding under the canvas. It can be found at JoAnn's and it has two thin layers of batting with a silver metallic material sandwiched between. It is used for pot holders.

Absolutely, Fi! I have not used a "Big Board" and don't know what kind of pad they use, but I am really pleased with this blocking pad for both pressing and blocking.

This is how the instructions for the 2013 BOM "Two Of Us" tell us to block our strips for the border in month 1.
The pins stay firmly in place, right where I put them.
