Thanks ! everyone..for all the input. I did look thru the Amish site..lots of interesting info. The thread measureing method
would be some thing to try....would have to be keeping very good track ! I also found several other sites offering custom work..
some very expensive..and some not ! Some charging by the sq foot and some with flat rates for a given level of stitching.....all
interesting but the link I'll try to add had the best business model. In the end ,I'll just pick the best I can...Prob'ly calculating
by the sq in as I have done in the past with machine work and adding rates for basting and binding. Will think long and hard before doing it again.

Idaho, I found a website for Amish hand quilting which lists prices for prepping a quilt, basting, marking and quilting by hand. They charge by the yard of thread at 1.10 per yard. There are additional fees for the other services. There are a lot of blank areas in the site, I often thought I was at the bottom of the page when I just needed to scroll quite a bit further. Here is the link: http://www.amishhandquilting.com/

In the Midwest there used to be (a few years ago, don't know about now) a lot of rural churches, especially Mennonite, and sometimes some of the retirement villages would have quilting groups who would hand quilt for others; my mother had a queen-sized quilt beautifully hand-quilted for me after she finished the stamped cross-stitch embroidery that I had started. That's probably been 20+ years ago (my, how time flies), but that might be a possibility in some areas. I have no idea how much she paid (it was not prohibitive, or she wouldn't have gone that route!). Nancy

Maybe you could do a google search for hand quilting? I think the Amish will hand quilt for others and maybe you can find a link to them through a search. Try to find out what they charge for hand quilting and at least that will give you a starting point. Good luck!

The same way as paying per inch of thread used, but using a longer measure, I would imagine.

I hate to be dense..but my spools of thread are many yards and cost prob'ly less than $10/spool for a high quality cotton...
How can that work? Marilyn

I don't know if I am too late with this reply but I recently priced long arm quilting here in Ireland and it seems that it is about €150 for a pantograph type quilting but custom quilting will cost somewhere in the region of €400 - for a queen/kingsize quilt. Hope that gives you some idea. Rita. :D

A person that I know who does custom hand quilting charges per inch of thread used. I can't remember what she charges though.

I know there are many ways to figure the quilting costs..is there a "best" way ? What is the
going rate in your part of the world ? How do you differentiate straight-line from detailed or
custom hand-quilting. Or do You? Could use some input on the matter from all my quilting
friends at TQS forum.
