Thanks for the compliment, Carole. I found the idea in a German magazine. I was intrigued by the hole in the middle, but it looks really nice with a candle. Roll on Christmas!

Lorchen, that looks great! I've never seen anything quite like it, and it's beautiful.

I have done it!! And I delighted with the result. The first picture was taken with a flash and the others without. The taffeta wasn't as bad to work with as I thought it would be. I had no problems pressing it. But I did pin it at one edge, and decided that pinning was not a good idea, because she holes would still have been visible when the piece was finished.

Mmmmhhh...... The taffeta is quite contentedly sitting on my cutting table waiting for me to get my act together. I started half-term with a visitor for a few days, and I'm off tomorrow to meet up with friends for the rest of half-term. Inbetweens I managed to sew the binding on a very large bed quilt, started working on something for my little granddaughter for Christmas, and finished a fun piece for a friend who has recently retired (why can't there be 40 hours in the day???). My deadline for the little taffeta piece is the 15th of November. I bet I'll be the last who sends her piece.

Another way of getting the most out of the shot qualities could be some quilting , but make sure you use a high loft wadding to get the most sculptural effect, rather than a flat one.

If you are serious about trying your hand at smocking, I suggest you go and have a look at http://www.countrybumpkin.com.au they have some seriously cute smocking kits which come ready pleated (well worth while for beginners)

"Smocking"??? What's that???.......... Only joking, Rosemary. I know about it, have read about, know what it looks like, but I have never done it. A little pleating may be a much easier starting point, especially when I'm thinking of the time constraints I have.

Actually, talking about smocking: I guess I should have a go one of these days, seeing that I now have this mega-cute little granddaughter.

Definately sounds like the shot silk to me. Pleating could be fun to take advantage of 'shot' qualities - are you up for smocking?

Rosemary, you were right. My piece of taffeta (a generous fat quarter) has arrived and it's a fairly stiff fabric with a definite 'scrunch' to it. The colour is stunning, a very dark, almost glowing burgundy that can look black, depending how the light falls on it. I won't be able to seriously 'play' till half-term (end of October) and will report what's happening or seriously scream for help.
