Check out my profile - the Stars Ablazin quilt and pillows were done using cut off triangle scraps left over after making the double star border for the quilt itself. The center of the quilt originally was called to be a large print fabric - no peicing - but when I layed it out it just looked wrong (I think because I increased the pattern to fit a queen bed) Luckily I am a pack rat
and I saved all the triangles I cut off when I made the flying geese units that make up the stars, so I had hundreds of triangles to play with. I sorted them by color and then just started laying them out on the back of a flannel table cloth in the star shape until I had the star I wanted to fit the quilt center. I sewed the triangles together into squares, then figured out what size the squares need to be to make the star fit and sqaured them all up (ok that was tedious, lol) and then sewed the whole thing together. It was a lot of fun to do and really it was not that hard to do. The table cloth was especially handy because I could roll it up and set it aside when I was not peicing so I did not lose my layout.
Good luck and let us know what you do
