Actually I was thinking Nearly Every Stinkin' Seam, so you were pretty close  The thing is though either there would be lots of stops & starts or lots of stitch lines on top of one another which could get really bulky really quickly :? , and I don't fancy either of those

Rosemary, I actually like more your final version of the quilt. To me, seems pretty well balanced, and the light, medium and dark values read very nicely with just enough "pop" from the red. But then, I really like random and the unexpected :o  As for the quilting, I think stars all over, like if it was one of those long arm continuos designs, would work very well instead of ESS or NESS.

Thanks for your suggestion of quilting stars all over it, I was completely stumped as to a) how to quilt it? and b) what to call it? and you have supplied me with both answers - I will be calling it 'Random Stars' :D

Lois et al, I'm up for using 200 & 201 for this week exercise. I love the final quilt and how she found a way to work around her issue with applique, and as a result, it turned into a gorgeous piece, when she could've just have one more UFO or pass it along to someone else.

Maureen, I'm really sorry to hear about your friend and her DH. One of my best friends, more like a sister to me, is having a really hard time too. Thankfully her DH prostate cancer was encapsulated and was removed with surgery without the need for chemo or radiation. He's recovering really good. On the other hand her Dad's cancer in a kidney, just got spread to his liver and esophagus and there's not much hope, neither he wants to try chemo, since the possibility it'll work is minimal. I know exactly how you fell, I wish there was more I could do for her, but we also live in different states so, all I can do is call, send her messages, pray for them and be there for her whenever she need to talk  We will include you, your friend and her DH in our prayers. I think Wendy's idea is really good, maybe using the photo as inspiration but including how you want to see your friend (meaning, she and her DH healthy and happy) might help with the "quilters block" (no pun intended). I'm sure you'll come up with a gorgeous quilt. Hugs :)

ESS is Every Stinkin' Seam which is what Cindy Needham says you need to SID. I'm guessing NESS is NOT Every Stinkin' Seam because there are just too many of them! (Rosemary can correct me if I'm wrong....)

What a great little quilt Rosemary. I like the balance just as it is. I would definitely go for a more 'Modern' quilting on this one. ESS? I don't think so.

It's sure all a matter of personal sensibilities ...I like the balance here, Rosemary.....and I really like the "scrappy"
look with hidden stars ! I loved the original one, too...but I will say it might have led me astray of the
Red Fury design....where others were vaguely reminiscent which is where my mind goes..to keep the" whisper" going.
This is such a good exercise for me....and #200 is going to be a big stretch ! I'd love to see all of these ideas made up.....
Keep 'em coming ! :D :D :D

After seeing Lois's little quilt, I thought - what the heck and threw this together this afternoon, when I should have been getting on with tidying the house for the in-laws stopping tomorrow
3485_img764.jpg

The colour balance is wrong, there is far too much dark red, and peach, but I only used 7 x 6" square pieces of fabric - there should have been nearly twice as many blues to achieve the same sort of balance as the original had. I think I achieved random reasonably ok - random means if 2 pieces the same end up next to each other then so be it (I think). Personally speaking I am rather glad that this piece is going to be headed for AAQI, because it is not something that I would chose to live with, I prefer things to be much more orderly. ESS is going to be something of a cow too (if I don't decide to skip it  ), I might go with NESS instead :P

Rosemary, I don't know what I was doing wrong but I managed to find the quilt your way. I'd prefer working from the whole quilt design and will agree to get over my problem with the colors not reading right on my computer. I need practice just ignoring some of my stumbling blocks. It might be interesting to use both pictures of for inspiration. If we were given a real quilt we could look at it from both close up and far away. What say all of you?

Maureen, It will be such fun to learn more about the photographer. I am thinking about you lots these days and I am asking the universe to send lots of creative muses your way so that they may ease your work, let it flow and allow you to have very much fun with what you are doing.
Lois, perhaps you need to ask yourself 'why is this being a stumbling block for me? and what can I do to either learn from it or learn how to avoid it'. You are usually so good at words and putting things into perspective for us, perhaps you ought to see if you can turn it around onto yourself.

Maureen, I am sorry to hear about your friend and her husband. How very worrying for her and you. You have plenty of time to make the quilt, just put it aside for a few days if that helps. I am happy to concertina my time a bit too like Nancy so please don't stress yourself.

I had a quick look at quilt 1000200 - and I don't think we should be worried about whether it is a full quilt or a close-up detail. It's still a valid exercise and I did enjoy getting the cogs moving on Red Fury too. The quilting on 1000200 is amazing isn't it?

Maureen, my sympathy for your friend & her DH. Could you start by having a few minutes of thought for her and then try and move your thoughts onto another subject, and then onto your design ideas. Or maybe, run through a list of what can you actually do to help her now - maybe a phonecall to just give her some support/try to take her mind off her problems for a little while and then try to make it a regular part of your day/everyother day, so that it gives you a definite feeling that you have shown you care, and then try to turn to other things that you also need to do (besides the CW quilt).

Re-reading this, I don't feel as if I have been very helpful at all, but it is meant well.

Maureen - I'm sorry to hear about your friend's troubles! Let the muses arrive as they will. If it takes you a little longer to make your quilt, I'm happy to try to make up for it on my end (without sacrificing quality!).
