There are two main traditional styles of quilting in UK, Welsh & North Country (also called Durham quilting). I reckon if I use the Welsh style as my basis for the quilting I won't have to worry so much about lining up the not so square squares!
And before anyone asks what is the 'North Country' style is like you can go here

I took a day course with Lilian Hedley some years ago and learnt that the traditional way to draw feathers is to use either an old english 'penny' which is 1 1/4" in diameter, or for the smaller feathers, a 'ha-p'ny' (1/2 penny) which is 1" diameter for the rounded ends and then you join them up to spine the same way as Alex does. The good thing with drawing the traditional designs is that you don't need compasses (or circle drawing thingies) you just go and find a coin or cup or plate that is about the right size and draw around that!
