WOW!! That is amazing with all the signatures on there!! Looking forward to seeing all the rest of it in time for the deadline! :wink:

You can do this!

(And I love the name you gave your quilt! Too clever!!)

Got my first flying geese border on :D :D

Attachment {!-- ia1 -->August 2011 001.jpg{!-- ia1 --> not found

Edit - Darn it :evil: now I look at it carefully on the screen, I think that it would look better with a small coloured border/crumb catcher thingy between the geese and the centre panel - 'Rassen, rassen,rassen' as Muttley would say.

Now I just have to sew up all the rest of these squares, get them on and print up the rest of the names for the outer flying geese border, which will be colour reversed.

I will be pushing it to finish by the end of the year, but I soooo want to make the cut into the book. I guess I will be using my usual hot needle and burning thread technique :roll:

Margo, it is very similar except yours has larger leaves. Thanks for the suggestion. I will keep that color in mind.

Annis, zooming in on your photo, I think your background fabric is similar to what I used on the back of my Friendship Bouquet quilt. I used a medium value sage green Bottom Line thread, and was very pleased with how it looked.

Most of my summer just evaporated. I'm finally getting back to some sewing this week that isn't work related but am having to get up a little earlier than usual to do so. Nothing like being motivated to get something done! I now have 16 of 48 blocks assembled. And I've made another change of plans. The rag quilt idea won't be happening as I need to finish this quilt quickly and have someone else do the quilting to free up some time. So I found this dark green fabric in my stash for my setting squares and triangles. There is also enough for the border and I have enough of the striped fabric from a quilt I made for my father-in-law in 2000 that will work for a narrow border and binding. Now I just need to decide on a thread color for quilting so the background won't look so dark. I'm open to suggestions. There's a little bit of gold and turquoise in the dark green fabric. Some of the plaids that I'd already cut will still get used. I'm going to use at least half of them for a quilt that I will be making for a brother-in-law soon, and the fact that they are already cut helped me to come up with a design for this quilt.

I like the geese for the reason you gave. "They flew along way" and the fact that there were doubles seems they were just asking to be in the quilt. For me it just fits the whole story of the exchange way too well not to use them. I like cross hatch design and you are talking about hand quilting. Those stitches would be such a pleasure - all on the bias. You will know what the quilt wants to be. I think its talking to you already. It is very beautiful. Lois

i'm on the WITH FLYING GEESE front - i really like the combo with the flying geese, a widish neutral and the smaller red to tie it all together - again, one of many opinions - do as YOU like best - and have fun playing :o )

I love the flying geese, too. I think a pieced border really adds zip to a quilt.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I appreciate all your opinions, and have tired my arms out working on the design wall (back of a vinyl tablecloth), making so many variations. And I thought I was almost finished! :roll: ... so I'm going to let these ideas incubate a while. I find that it works best if you let things muddle around in your head for a while. But I honestly thank you for your opinions. I think I'm going to keep the flying geese, as some of those birds flew all the way from Australia, or Scotland or further. That was my intention in keeping all those duplicates. Like, "If you get lemons, make lemonade", if you get doubles in a quilt exchange, make flying geese :lol: Every one is special, right? Margo, thanks for your super idea, I love your quilt idea - I put it up on the wall, and really liked it. However, I'm not very good at fancy quilting yet, and I only have a domestic machine. I may hand quilt this. Machine quilting makes me nervous (but I'll get over it - someday)

Even if you don't plan on doing "fancy quilting", adding a wide border to make the quilt a larger size would give you room to show off your hand quilting.
Even a plain cross-hatching there would be beautiful, and a pleasure to work on without having to deal with seams! :D

Well I liked the flying geese too but less neutral and thinner red borders. There now I think you got 10 different opinions! But you can't lose with whatever you choose.
