I think I'm going to try my first double=sided quilt. Hopefully everyone put their names on the triangle paper which I want to print on fabric and make into HSTs themselves for a pattern on the back. The front I guess is not too original. I love the simple patterns or the cover quilt on Edyta's book. I keep trying to design something myself but can't help feeling there's a couple standard patterns I've wanted ever since I started quilting so think my heart for all my special friendship squares is to do one of those tried and true patterns.
You are a very courageous quilter! I;m no where near trying to even think about a double sided quilt. So far, I've mounted all my HSTs papers from the Batik exchange onto pretty construction paper and will have them laminated. Then, I'm going to print out all the names and places on one sheet - maybe in calligraphy - because the mounting of the real little papers took seven pages! (well spaced, not crowded) As for a pattern - I agree with you - why re-invent the wheel when there are so many good, established patterns out there. Between Edyta and Margo, they are lots of nice choices. I was also trying to come up with something new and nifty, but the variety of colours would suit a simple pattern, In my humble opinion.
Double sided quilts aren't anything to be afraid of, I've also come across it being refered to as 'back art'. And why shouldn't you have as much fun on the back as the front. I would suggest though, that if one side is inrticate or small patches, make the other side big patches, maybe make one large block, or set of 4 for the reverse.
On my profile there is a double sided cover - blue satin one side 9-patch on the other, which I made as a quilt as you go, and also a couple of partial quilt tops, that are going to (eventually) be put back to back, the tops are now finished by the way, just waiting assambly but since it will be my first full size quilt not done 'quilt as you go' I am 'wossing out' on putting it together.
