journal quilts 19 Aug 2009 13:53 #37713

:D
I am excited about this group. I am already in a monthly journal group at my local quilt shop and this will fit right in with what we are doing.
When my daughter gets back from Europe, I will have her help me to put in a picture

my journal quilt ideas 19 Aug 2009 08:02 #37705

It appears I found you all. I hope I am posting in the right spot in this section.

This spring I had an idea to make myself a set journal quilts based on free form quilting exercises I did from Sharon Chambers website - I used small 8x10 size peices and quilted away and they were on really junky fabric but as I did them I thought how valuable they could be as reference - and the thought is as far as I got! But now you have inspired me with this great section on TQS.

It is very exciting to me to see so many of you getting into the journal quilting.......because they are right from your own brain it frees you up to try new things and to think of your own ingenious ways to tell your story. Welcome aboard! Be sure to share on the Show & Tell area for journals quilts.

I almost finished my first. I am so excited about the quilt that the prickly issues at work seem less so. This is the first quilting project that has come from MY head and heart. I can't wait til I can post. Gloria

I would like to join up to this, as I have generally made bed quilts, double or larger, it would be good to make something rather smaller, and able to be finished within in reasonable period of time!!! Not sure what my theme will be as rather than some who cannot think of anything, my head is whirling with ideas!!!

Sounds good to me too. I thought there might be a suggested topic or two to get us started....Song titles is a good possibility, although I am not especially musical. Maybe book titles.....hmmm.

Hi Eugenie, just a recap: -

Journal Quilting

1 Pick a theme of your choice.

2 Make a quilt 8.5 x 11 inches - embellish and create as you like, even make it bigger if you wish, this is just a guide.

3 We will have quarterly sets, (Jan-Mar, Apr-June, July-Sept, Oct-Dec) so each set is made of 3 quilts, one for each month. This is not set in stone, it’s just a way of making a nice set before moving on to your next theme. If you wish to carry your theme over to the next quarter, feel free!! It’s your Journal.

4 Make brief notes on your process and thoughts as you work.

5 Share with other “journalists” on the show & tell site when finished. see-quilts/show-and-tell-quilts/

6 Use this “journal quilts” thread for discussion, brainstorming and comments.

Please note that as this is the begining of this new venture, we are including September in the first quarter set. You can use this as thinking time or make a fourth quilt. :D

Hope this helps.

Hi Lorchen

Sun printing is really easy. I started with some pieces of fabric, slightly larger than A4 size, which I placed in a litter tray (mine not the cat's!), and tried different ways of adding the colour. Some I sprayed with water first which allowed the paints to mingle more, others I used dry. I used silk paints and Lumiere metallic fabric paints mainly. For the bird piece I had some freezer paper shapes already cut out for a previous project so I just laid them on the fabric with something to weigh them down, added a few other things, including a piece of chain and put them on the front step. Fortunately the postman had already been otherwise I think he would have finally been convinced that I was mad as there were three trays in total with a variety of washers, chains, screws etc that I found in the garage. It really didn't take very long and if I had another go I would use more natural forms like leaves. Worth trying it on a window ledge if the wind is too strong. Maggi

Already some JQ's 18 Aug 2009 06:13 #37680

Hi,

I already made som JQ's and posted them on my blog at TQS and on blogger:
http://lapis-lazuli-q.blogspot.com/search/label/Journal_Quilts
My theme is/was "Emotions", but after 5 I got a JQ-block.
I would like to join this new group, though, and perhaps with another theme.
What are the rules/restrictions until now?
Is there already a space at TQS to show the JQ's?

:)

You are certainly included Peg...we'd love to have a peek into what's happening in your life....we're such "voyeur's " you know! All of us living vicariously in one another's lives...and best of all we just get closer to one another in our passion for all things quilted.
