Judy, yes I use soda ash for dyeing. I use a gallon bucket and put about a 1/2 to 1 cup of soda ash in hot water and place my (to be dyed) fabric in it to soak. It really helps especially if you don't get "prepared for dye" fabric. You can buy it at any home improvement store.

Has anyone tried using pool alkalinity booster (sodium bicarbinate) for procion mx dyeing?
If so, what is your experience?
