And she (Nancy) said, "Your wish is my command." Thank you! I loved seeing the maps of the USA and Australia. I just read an article somewhere indicating that here in the USA there are indications that we are learning a little bit more than we once knew about world geography. Perhaps that's a combination of world travel becoming more in the realm of possibility for more people and our use of www. It truly is a World Wide Web that has woven the quilters who visit these pages together. Isn't life/technology wonderful. At the same time, I really worry with the use of GPS systems in cars and phones for pedestrians we will forget how to read maps.

Just thinking, "we've got to be way off topic on this one", then looked at the Thread title to see the conversation fits. Amazing but true!

Carol, especially when you think in terms of the Great Lakes having islands and ship wrecks.

Those are great visuals! My German/Canadian friends explained that what causes problems is the maps of the US & the European countries are in an atlas on the same size pages of paper.

I live in Michigan and so many people do not realize how large the Great Lakes are.

Ha! and by one reference, Europe has 3,930,000 sq mi, and which countries are included and in what year was the data compiled. The plot thickens.

I just did a web search and found this:

You have to be careful when comparing maps of these large areas because how they look will depend on the underlying map projection. From what I found, Australia is 2.97 million sq miles while the continental US is 3.12 million square miles.

Thanks everyone.

Also people do arrive in Alice Springs and ask the way for a walk to Ayers Rock/Uluru...............BUT its 450km or 260 miles away from Alice Springs.

Anne it is so hard when our children live so far away, our daughter lived in London for a few years so I feel for you.

I wish we could superimpose a map of the USA to scale on that map to gain further understanding of the distances we all relate to in our daily lives. I wouldn't have a clue how to do that but i am very curious about what I might learn by looking at such an image.
