How have I missed this thread?? Lorchen! The chess board is fantastic! What a fascinating category. Just like everyone else, I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next time!

This is a very interesting discussion Lorchen. I do love your chess board...it seems more of a quilt, somehow, too. I think quilt shows should add this category to their shows from time to time. :D

I cant think of anything better to say than ditto to: "Holy Smolly, Lorchen!   You will never cease to amaze me (us?). Brilliant! This is WAY better than underpants! Both your chess set and you are smashing!"

Very likely that it was her Yurt, Nancy. I just wonder who paid for getting it to Houston and back.

She was overheard at Festival of Quilts stressing a little because the willow was drying out too much and it distorted the coracle. She did win 1st Prize in that category.

That must have been her yurt at Houston last year. Very cool!

Your wish is my command! :)

The description in the catalogue:

Linzi Upton, Banchory
The Quilted Coracle
Freehand longarm quilted; embellished with hand-sewn beads. Woven wicker.
Chamois leather, bronze spandex, willow and beads.
This project was inspired by a bronze age wicker coracle in the Elgin museum. Instead of tarred canvas I have used decorative fabrics. Celtic spirals and circles are used as quilting motifs.

I'm sure this piece will turn up in magazines soon. Linzi Upton did a full-size quilted Yurt a couple of years ago. So this is actually quite a small project for her. :)

Rosemary, Susan, I'll download pictures as soon as I can and will post that coracle here.

Rosemary, I bet that one is not watertight - more a work of art, but full-size.

And in Ireland it's a currach which has a leather-hide and tar to seal it. Might make a mess of the quilt!

I thought a coracle was a boat made from a basket. How is that quilting?

Ah, the education level of quilt judges...perhaps they need Rosemary to help them spot hand embroidery.
After the basket weaving you need a (waterproof) quilt to cover it...

a similar boat in the americas, I believe is known as a 'bull boat', in that you use a bull's skin to cover it.
