TOPIC: Anyone near South West Virginia?

Re: Anyone near South West Virginia? 03 Jul 2013 18:27 #106168

I thought that I would report in on our trip to Virginia. We visited two quilt shops in Abingdon. One was in the downtown area: Jeannine's Quilt Shop. It was rather small, but we managed to find some fabric that begged to go home with us. The other was a ways out: Virginia Highlands Quilt Shop. This was a big bigger and was packed with fabric. They had quite a bit on discount shelves. My friend found some in the same line and colorway of fabric that she had purchased the day before at the other shop, so she added to her collection. I found some cat panels with the matching all-over print. I had to add to my cat fabric collection. I also found some fabric that I hope will work into a quilt that I am planning that features music and cats. We also went to a yarn shop. I purchased some yarn and a pattern to make a shawl. Expensive for me, but it was one thing that I really thought about purchasing before the trip. I fell in love with Virginia! I think that I could live there!

Sorry, I just returned from southeast Virginia last week, but did not go to any quilt shops in Virginia   . DH and DSIL were only interested in battlefields. I have seen enough cannons to last a long time. :) We did stop at a shop in West Virginia. If you are driving through West Virginia, there is a quilt shop in Barboursville, WV Quilts. The shop is small, but the owner is so nice. Offered to make us coffee and let DSIL tap into their WIFI to use his computer. In the back room she has boxes (large ones) full of manufacturer samples. She sells these by the pound. Michelle is the woman who is at all the AQS shows with the fabric samples. The front of the shop has all newer on the bolt and fat quarters. She had some 30's reproduction quilt backing that I have been searching for for several years. I think anyone who stops there will enjoy their visit. I plan on going back someday, until then, I will see her at Des Moines and Paducah.

Abingdon is a lovely little town, and has a quilt shop, but I haven't been there.
Here is their Facebook link, but I don't see a web site: https://www.facebook.com/vahighlandsquiltshop

Sew What Fabrics & Batiks Etc, is located on Main Street in Wytheville, VA, and they have lots of fabric, but it looks like they don't have a web site either. :(

Are you traveling north or south on 81? There are several great quilt shops not far off 81. In Harrisonburg, don't miss the Virginia Quilt Museum.

Just search using different search engines.

Apparently NO ONE lives near SW Virginia or is familiar with the area!

How about Abingdon, VA? Is this familiar to anyone?

My daughter, my friend, and I are planning a trip to the Emory, Virginia area in two weeks. My daughter plans to attend a training session at the Emory & Henry College. My friend and I are looking for lodging and interesting things to do for the one day that my daughter will be the workshop. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!
