"Afternoon Delight" was one of Sue Garman's favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple appliqué and Double Nine-Patch blocks and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and appliquéd blocks, and in the final month, you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures approximately 86 1/2" inches square.

Let's use this Topic "Afernoon Delight Show and Tell" as a place to show off your beautiful blocks. That way, you know where to come to see what everyone is doing.

The topics that apply to each month are a good place to ask questions or make suggestions for each block.

AND when you post your photos to Social Media, like Instagram, Facebook, etc., use either of these hash tags so everyone there will be able to find our wonderful work:

Diane Ross you have given me the perfect solution to enlarging Afternoon Delight to a queen sized quilt for my son and daughter-in-law on your June 21st post. I really like your layout and I can easily add the width and length I need to. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Sandy,
Your quilts are beautiful.
I am glad you photographed them on a bed. Your Afternoon Delight looks great. It gives us a happy idea of how good ours will look too!
Your 2008 BOM is beautiful too. The red border is perfect.

Diane,
Great layout. I like the diagonal lines you created with the 9 patches.
And I especially like the O blocks you designed.

Diane, Your quilt looks great. I haven't completely made up my mind yet, but I'm thinking of making a smaller quilt. I laid my completed blocks on point and I really like the overall look. I realized looking at the picture later I had not paid attention to layout of the "X's" and "O's". I want them on point because I want to use the inset triangle as part of the border. I'm going to continue making the applique blocks but may use for a second smaller quilt. I do have two granddaughters. 12 Month of blocks makes a very large quilt!

And I finally put a border on my 2008 BOM Bouquet for a New Day and as soon as the backing fabric arrives I will start quilting.

Diane Ross, I love the idea of putting some interest on the back. And it is a great way, to use those blocks that end up with a remake because the colors were not exactly
the way you envisioned they would look with the other front blocks. Using the block where the turn down on a bed is another great idea. Love the way your
creative mind works. You do beautiful stitching too. Thanks for sharing your progress. It seems like I am constantly adapting the quilt in progress by all the
great ideas that are shared on the forum. Your quilt is looking beautiful.

I was able to put up my design "wall" today, and try my planned layout. It's not wide enough to layout the entire width of the quilt, but good for a trial. I like the added shoo-fly blocks, they add a splash of color and I tried to use more medium value and bright colors on the additional blocks.
IMG_14122.jpg

I also used more medium value and bright colors in my applique blocks this month. Below are June's blocks, plus two extra O-type blocks I'll need for this layout. Thanks, HelenW for the suggestion to use the O-type blocks to add more color to the quilt.

Finally, I made 8 extra shoo-fly blocks and some spacers so I could have a bit of a detail on the back of the quilt. I like to include an element from the front on the back - it makes a nice touch when you turn down the bed. It also let me use my darkest shoo-fly blocks on the back. They're handsome blocks up close, but don't work as well on the front. It also lets me use more colorful ones on the front.

Diane Ross,
I really like the modified layout you came up with. Especially the balanced look of having the shoo fly blocks two in a row and then one in the next, but separating the
the look of the two by having the single in the middle of the row. I was already planning on a horizontal layout, but I think I will be making more shoo fly blocks too. Thanks for the great ideas.

My layout is below. Colors do not reflect my scrappy quilt - just for illustration purposes. The layout required 16 shoo-fly blocks - 7 more than the on point layout; 61 double nine-patches - that's 4 less that the on-point; and 22 each X and O applique blocks - that's 4 extra applique blocks, all O-type. I hope to put up my design wall this weekend and show the updated colors. The change is subtle, but that's all I was looking for.

I think your blocks are just lovely! Subtle color use is complex and delicate. Lol not that I've even come close to mastering it but I so admire it. I also really like the straight set. Would you be able to share how many modified shoo-fly blocks and nine patches you'll be using to do the straight set? I'm thinking of using a constant color for my nine patches to contract with my scrappy blocks.

Thanks

Judy,

I'm 69 and in reasonably good health but I'm also staying in. I have been working from home since Mar 19 and I go once a week to pick up my groceries curbside. I am fortunate that my son (who works from home) and his family live across the field and my brother lives next door so I am not 'alone'. My daughter lives an hour away and when schools closed she started working from home so I see her family also. Facetime is great but it doesn't replace hugs from the grandkids.

I have watched a couple episodes of Lovejoy but currently watching My Life is Murder. Midsommer Murders hooked me with the lush green countryside with little two lane roads and old ivy covered houses with low doorways.

Hope to have at least 30 of the double 9-Patch blocks done by the end of June. Hope to see your pictures soon.

Sandy,
I did some back-basting applique on this quilt too. I like that method. I had to start over on two blocks of my back-basted blocks because of too much fraying.
When I get a new phone with a working camera, I will post pictures. I am one of those elderly people with underlying health issues, so I am cautious about going out right now.

I like your black embroidery around your appliques. It is a nice touch. It looks good and it will tie them all together.

I like those same British movies/series. I keep looking for new ones also. Right now I am watching the "Lovejoy" series on Acorn. It is an older series. It starts out low budget but gets better through the series. I enjoy seeing the houses and antiques, and of course the British landscapes.

Happy sewing!
