Join us on a TQS exclusive 12-month historic journey recreating the historic Rajah Quilt, sewn by women convicts on board the ship Rajah traveling from England on April 1841 to the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land-now known as Tasmania. The original quilt measured at approximately 128" x 128", but Lessa recreated it in quarter scale with fabrics from her stash. She used many different scraps, imagining that's what might have happened when the original quilt was being made. She followed the colors of the original quilt loosely, and tea dyed fabrics that didn't look old enough. You can obtain the same look with reproduction fabrics, or make a more contemporary-looking version like the one created for TQS.

I always wash and press my fabrics. I do a lot of needle turn applique and washing makes the fabric hand soft so I can turn the edges under with ease. Even with piecing, I wash my fabrics and then use Best Press to starch, then press.

I haven't started the BOM yet I'm still deciding on fabrics  Although applique and broderie perse are my absolute favourite sewing to do, I love Rosemary's suggestion of using a period reproduction piece of fabric for the centre too.
Best Wishes pam

I am making my center different, I am just going to have the birds but will add some more birds and nothing else.

I plan to do this quilt as well. I hope to use reproduction fabric from my stash. I have not done a TQS quilt since Ruffled Roses, but I love history and I really like this quilt, so I'm throwing my hat into the ring.

The first video for the Rajah Quilt BOM is posted. The video is by Julie Cefalu on Rotary Cutting Basics where she shows how to do a cross cut, cut sub-units, and cut a strip that is wider than your ruler.

Oh, I am tempted to make this years BOM, haven't done a TQS BOM for several years. Did Ruffled Roses and Stars for a New Day. I really liked the way those turned out.

Trying to decide what colors to use.....I would like to pull from my stash.

Also, whether to make original center or use something else. I think the original center may be growing on me but not wild about it.

Block 1 is available to download, along with a bonus History lesson.

Great news -- Episode 1801 is available today! How cool is that

I had the opportunity to see the TQS version at the Ricky Super Seminar in Salt Lake City. Alex told me the story behind the quilt and I was so intrigued -- I was not familiar with The Rajah Quilt. I think a reproduction of a historic quilt is an interesting topic for a BOM. A medallion quilt has so many way to personalize it with fabric choices and customizing the center block. Looking forward to the new year!

OK, so I noticed a couple of folks mentioned washing their fabric. I was not going to do that but would be interested in who is.

Terrie, My very long sewing to do list has been ignored for so long, but I really like this pattern/concept, too. Lottie's lizard and Sue's mug rug will get there, I promise, but I just couldn't resist this BOM. I reluctantly abstained from the Row Robin although I sure wanted to throw my hat in. Anyway, my one and only resolution for 2016 is to spend at least a few hours a week sewing, so I'm going to give it a go.

Charae, now you're really making me THINK! Would be so nice to keep up with everyone, but I've had to decline some other projects, but I sure do like this one. It doesn't look like it has as much applique as 2015's had. I like applique, but it takes TIME.
Might try to use my stash.

I'm in! And I'm going to seriously try to keep up. With any luck 2016 won't be as turbulent as 2015 was and I will get to spend more time sewing!
