TOPIC: Block "T" sizing problem

Re: Block "T" sizing problem 12 Jul 2014 19:28 #119742

Thanks Rita, I'm going to ripe them out. I know my 1 1/2 sq were correct. It has to be the seam.

Hi Jan, I think maybe your seam allowance for the HSTs must be too small. If that's not the case then the HSTs themselves must be too big. I hope you get it sorted out.

Both my side panels are longer that 9 1/2". Has anyone else had this problem?

Hmm...finished my "T" block this morning and had no problems with any of the measurements. I checked my instructions, the HSTs along each side of the "T" should be trimmed to 2.5. String 4 of those in a row, you should get 8.5" (raw edge to raw edge) which should fit the background. The tree blocks should each measure 4.5" square (raw edge). Joining 3 of those together should create a forest 12.5" x 4.5" which should exactly fit across the top of the background after the side triangles are sewn on.

The "middle" row of the tree is half as wide as the top (1" finished vs 2" finished), so at first glance it may appear to be too short when the design is meant to be that way.

My directions appear to be correct for all the blocks this month. :)

Thank you for your help. I tried a different ruler and the measurements were off just a little on my first cut. Everything seems okay now.

I've done the 'T' block and had no problems either. If your HSTs on either side of the centre square are too long or too short then I reckon it must be your seam allowance that is the problem. If you still have a problem after that then post a photo here (scroll down to 'upload attachment') and we can see what's going on if you think it might help.

Just finished the T block and yes, there is a problem with the measurements. The main problem I had was with the middle part of the tree...it was way too short.

Block "T" sizing problem 02 Jul 2014 14:04 #119315

I am having a problem with the size of the 8.5" background square fitting to the tree rows and the side 1/2 sq triangles. Instructions say to cut the 1/2 sq triangles down to 2.5" after sewing each one. I did that but the strip is at least 1/2" longer than the background square.
