I made a tote/bag using the Cotton Theory method and it was so easy and I use the bag all the time.
Maybe Betty Cotton has something on Youtube or with Nancy zieman.

Nonnie, I am finding it hard to understand how cotton theory works. Is it like a stitch and flip method? If so that would not work for the BOM.

I am doing it as quilt as your go, and much maths and thinking is working.
And I am pleased with the result. Quite the challenge.

HAVE you tried the COTTON THEORY techniques ... she wrote books and teaches classes about this technique

Her DVD shows how to do the technique and is pretty good... she has taught the technique on SEWING WITH NANCY and other quilting shows ...

I have used some of her techniques with success.

Here is one of many Youtube videos showing a project assembled with the QAYG method: http://www.thequiltingedge.com/2011/02/tutorialqayg-5-joining-blocks-with.html

And here is a link to Sharon Pederson's classroom video showing how to add a border to a completed quilt: learn/classrooms/

Hi Ritzy and Rita, thank you both so much for your excellent advice. I have already added the sashing to my blocks so would choose to QAYG in 3 alphabet sections.

Yes it is possible to QAYG the BOM.

If you want to QAYG there are several ways of doing it. You could quilt individual blocks or sections. Personally I think the individual blocks are too small to QAYG but, for example, month 1 - A, F and G - would make a nice sized section to quilt as one unit. Alternatively you could break the alphabet into 3 sections - A to J, K to O and T to Z. The main thing you have to remember is that you need to quilt before adding the sashing. The other important thing to know is that you should not trim your blocks to size before quilting as they shrink as you quilt.

So if you are thinking of doing QAYG in smaller sections then the sashing around the outside of A, F and G, for example, only gets added when you are attaching it to either the top or left side border or the B/H block. And, you cannot add the sashing to the front without attaching the sashing to the back too and the sashing on the back will be approximately twice the width of the sashing on the front. Please also be aware that the back of the quilt will be in sections depending on where you joined it on the front. I hope that helps. :D

I think there might be something useful in the classroom from Sharon Pederson. I seem to recall her doing a demo of adding sashing to an already quilted quilt?

I have been doing the BOM in half-size and I have been quilting as I go. I have not finished quilting the last panel but when I do, I will have to look into how I am going to put them together with the other panels. I will let you know how that goes. I know somewhere there was a post on here about one of the teacher's method of doing QAYG but I don't remember who that was. Maybe someone will chime in and let us know. At the very least, I will do a check online to see what I can find.

Myself and Bellydancer are considering quilting our Ewe and Me BOM using the Quilt as you go method and wondered if anyone can offer any advice, tips or comments. Janet has replied to our query but hasn't made a quilt using the QAYG method so we would really appreciate any suggestions. Please feel free to comment as any advice would be more than welcome. :D
