I got the nicest reply from Bernina support:

Hello Karen,

Thank you for your email.

Yes, you can use a twin needle on your B700 for shadow embroidery. Our 9mm stitch plate with 5.5mm stitch hole should work well for this, and may be purchased through your BERNINA dealer (part# 033339.70.08)

We would suggest that you turn off Thread Away in setup because of the movement of the hoop when the thread is cut. It would probably be OK, but you wouldn't want to risk breaking the needles . We would also suggest not stitching a design that completely fills the hoop.

We hope this helps.
Happy Embroidering!

I am so excited!! I just brought one home last week and am learning my way around. I have an 830 that I am keeping--but I gifted my Artista E730 to our daughter.

So, I wonder--can I do twin needle shadow embroidery designs on my B700 if I turn off the auto cutters and put on a stitch plate with a wider needle opening?

I sent this question to Bernina help. If it can't now, maybe a future firmware update can fix this. Until then, I'm glad I have my 830 with embroidery capabilities so I can do my shadow work designs on it. But, dang, I thought this new B700 could do it all.
