Gosh, I'm glad you figured it out!! I haven't had that problem, but I did have a glitch with my automatic buttonhole foot. It was fixed when I wiped the "eyeball" on the foot to make sure it was clean!! So, that might help you , too.

Many thanks for all the suggestions, I had tried some including the turn off to reboot and checking the settings. I had the correct foot and pressure plate. Weirdly, a word I often use with this machine, i used the lower foot button and lowered and raised the foot and all of the patterns reappeared. All I can think is that for some reason it wasn't reading the foot as attached prior.

Thanks again for the ideas and here is one more if someone ever needs it.

Some stitch selections have been inexplicably graying out on my 830 lately. I was never able to find out why.
It happened recently when I was using different stitches for crazy quilting. I was using the 9mm stitch plate and the presser foot the 830 recommended for each stitch.
A few days ago, I was having a different problem, so I went into the setup menu and reset the settings, just to clear everything out, and then turned it off and on again. (page 44 of the manual).
I just checked for grayed out stitch patterns. I have the 0 mm stitch plate on. I put on the 1C, 8D and 97D, and told the machine which one I was using. I selected different stitches, including those sideways stitches. None of my stitch choices are grayed out.
However, because I first told the 830 which foot and stitch plate I have on, the 830 won't sew anything but a straight line - which is a great security feature I appreciate.

Sometimes when my 830 is acting up, I can correct the problem by turning it off, waiting a minute for all those little electrons to settle down, and turning it on again - like what you would do when your laptop computer freezes up. But I don't think that solved my grayed out stitches problem. I think resetting the settings and being careful, like Lorna says, to remember to tell it which foot and plate you have on, may be the key.

Let us know how it goes.

You may have already done these things but here are some thoughts. The graying out is generally a safety feature so that you don't do a stitch that the machine isn't set up for. You need to have the correct foot on that will accommodate the size of the stitch and you need to make sure you have the correct pressure foot on. Also you need to TELL the machine which of these you have on. It doesn't help to change form the 0mm to the 9mm pressure foot if you don't also change the setting.

I have had my 830 about 2 years but it is only in the last 6 onths I have really begun t use it. Today I tried to use a stich pattern from the 800 group but they were all greyed out. Every other numeric series appears to be available. Any suggestions are welcome.
