Go to http://www.deskdave.com You should find his website. He does a fantastic job on reconditioning and painting featherweights. I have a few featherweights that are the original paint and I wouldn't change them.
But if you ever look for a machine that's been reconditioned from the inside out, he's a very reputable person! I just checked him out today. His prices aren't cheap but the machines are phenomenal.

Who is Desk Dave? I went to the site you suggested, and found nothing clickable there and very little information. What can you tell us about him and his work?

This is a little more pricey, I think, because of the art. I paid $1399 not including tax which is less than what other dealers were charging. (I have a great dealer).
There are other activa machines in the Bernina line, the regular 230, the 220, the 240 and actually the 210 which is a real beginner.
Bernina also sells Bernette which are machines made for Bernina. They are less expensive but are quite good, too. Bernina is supposed to be having some big promotion coming up, I think this coming weekend.

do you mind if I ask the cost? I want to get a nice, small machine for my niece when she graduates college next year, but that will also mean one for her sister the next year and her cousin 2 years after that...

The White Pearl isn't one of the more sophisticated machines. It's really an Activa 230 dressed up. There are 3300 worldwide painted with a beautiful design just for Bernina by designer Niklas Jacob. Each machine is hand painted and numbered. (mine is 272).
I have an attraction to "beautiful" machines. Two of my featherweights were reconditioned and painted, one a beautiful pink and the other ruby red. (You can go to deskdave.com and see how beautifully he does them.)
I also bought a featherweight on ebay decorated to look like the Lonestar. Gorgeous.
So the Pearl White caught my eye because it is beautfiul and because the 230's are great little machines.

I said I wouldn't do it. I said I didn't need it. But....I did it anyway. I bought the White Pearl. My dealer had ordered one and I resisted as long as I could, honestly. When my husband said, "Maybe we could....I didn't wait to hear the rest.
It's just a fun machine that is beautiful! (And it sews like a dream.)
She will keep the others company.
