Rosemary, good luck with moving all the books. That was a great idea to use the strips that can be used later too. We redid the bedroom floors a few years ago and had to clear out everything. All the closets too! What a mess. I won't have to do that again and I am glad. I am sure it will feel good to have the job all finished. Oh no, you will have to move all the books back. :silly: ;)

Heather, love the quilt so far, it is looking great.

Geneva, that is a great looking bag, the fabric reminds me of the saucy postcards we have at seaside resorts here. I know what you mean about cable tangles, I have been planning on making myself a cable organiser bag too. What is useful now is that so many of the charger cables now plug into a usb socket, which means that you only need to carry one plug, which is bulky, for several cables - finally a plus for all the tech we now carry!

Currently packing up 100's of books for moving and we have run out of boxes very early on, so a trawl through my stash of dress fabrics (actually hand-me-downs from other peoples stash) to find fabrics I will never wear, and tearing them into strips to tie the books up - the cunning plan being that the strips are about 1.5"-2" wide, so that afterwards they are a reasonable width for scrappy piecing with :P DH plans on having the lounge emptied and the carpet up by the end of tomorrow  :pinch:

Heather, I love the last layout that you did, and eventually sewed together! Your son is going to have a really great quilt. I think Cherrywwod fabrics (pretty sure that's what you said they were) has washing instructions on their site, for their fabrics. They are saturated fabrics, and so some can bleed if care is not taken. Be sure your son knows not to wash the quilt in hot water!!! :woohoo:

Geneva, love the baggy butts, oops, I mean the bag! Reminds me of a coaster at a restaurant we just ate at, "Does this make my glass look bigger?"

Dawn

thanks Dawn, and everyone! :) My son is very thrilled so far, and had input on the design so he's happy. Nothing like seeing that smile spread over his face, ya know? I know he'll be delighted, and appropriately grateful. He's a good kid.

I will definitely be sure he follows washing instructions for the fabrics; they did come with a card explaining. Especially having lights next to darks, he'll have to be careful. Or more likely, for at least a while, I'll be washing it....I doubt it will get washed much at college, only on breaks home most likely! But, that gives a good 4 years of proper washing before he'll be in charge of it....probably a very good thing!

And Geneva, I also love that fabric of the little old ladies at the beach! What a cute find, and perfect for a bag like that!

Geneva,
Isn't it just disgusting when you pull something out of your bag and when that kitchen sink appears, it's loaded with all the dirty dishes that accumulated while you were off doing more important things? ALLH. That stands for A Little Luann Humor.
Wendy's gonna send me to the chicken yard pretty soon,,,,

It's only raining lightly here at the opposite end of the US from the snow storm. Still a perfect day to sew!

Thursday I made a small bag for myself! When we travel I have what I call the "Pary Muffin" bag. Pary Muffin is a family term for Mary Poppins. When my daughter was little she loved Mary Poppins, but called her Pary Muffin. However, I digress.... Remember in the movie when Pary unpacks her belongings from a magical bag that is endlessly deep and wide? It carries everything. That's pretty much my bag that I carry when we travel. It's literally been all over the world. (not everywhere, but lots of somewheres!) However, when I try to find my cords and plugs they are usually all tangled up with the lamp shade or kitchen sink (!!) and I usually pull out the wrong cord. So I made a little bag to put the cords in.

Yesterday I received in the mail the fabric for a duvet cover for our bed. So this weekend I will work on that.

Happy weekend everyone! geneva

That is great Heather! He better give you a big hug when it is finished, or tell him your quilting friends will come get him. :) :) That should scare him. When he is out on his own, he will really appreciate all you have done for him, and won't have trouble letting you know. I really think the quilt is gorgeous. He is lucky young man!

Heather,
It's going to be beautiful, or should I say 'handsome'.

So, here's the final version laid out -- when I showed my son this version, he couldn't hold back the involuntary smile, and said "Whoa....nice!" First version of this part that has had such a response from him, so that is a win! He's not a very demonstrative guy with his feelings, at all, so any show of emotion means he is *really* happy, sad, etc.

After snapping this photo, I promptly sewed the pairs of triangles, so now ALL the triangles for the quilt are sewn into pairs, making a grand total of 306 HST squares, waiting to be pressed and assembled into sections, and then into a quilt top. Whew. As there will then still be borders, and then the quilting......and May is coming up fast......eek. Hopefully I finish in time.

Thanks for sharing your process, Heather. I love the art of quilting because there is always a story behind every quilt. I guess that's why we have 'Show and Tell' and not just "Show".
love it!
