I always wanted to try a spinning wheel too. In a fiber arts class I took we used a drop spindle as Rosemary described. We used a potato for the weight on the end. I made enough yarn to then weave a purse. It was fun.

Cannot help you with a spinning wheel, but a drop spindle is dead easy to make - a straight stick about a foot long with a weight at one end and a notch at the other. I suspect that if you google it on youtube there will be videos about them.
