Wonderful, Rosemary. Can't wait to see it. Since it is an art quilt and not a bed quilt does it really matter if the paper stays in it?

Celebrating here. I've finished the piecing on Maxiature and it is all together. Just got to sit and pick all the paper off the back  - next time I do something like this I will try it with Ricky Tims Stable Stuff. Photos will follow sometime next week - probably.....

Luann, I really like the green square in the lower right border, which balances the green background of your center. I think the borders you have are fine, without doing any changes. But, you may want to try putting a large square of a deeper purple, with not so prominent of a print over the lower left lavender batik, and seeing if that corrects your "off" that you are seeing. I think that might be a better balance. Okay, I'm done critiquing for today! Have fun with her! I need to get back to mine!

I've enjoyed seeing how you create your work. I rather liked it with a chip on her shoulder she looked as though she was peeking through.

Dawn,
Thanks for the input. I just had to go try it, and here are two images. I also took the out of sync piece and swapped it with the very light piece on lower left. I think "we" are going to have a nice piece.

Thanks for the info, Luann. I have no problem painting the perfect eye. The problem is painting another one exactly like it. I did Cabbage Patch dolls way back when, when you couldn't get them in the stores. Had quite a business going! For the piece I am working on now, I cut pale blue circles with my AccuQuilt cutter, and then put character into each circle with Pigma pens. The iris turned out amazing. Anyway, I had fun with the eyes!

As to your adding pieces to your quilt, the one piece that bothers me now is the one off of her left shoulder (right side looking at it) in the main center of the quilt. There is nothing balancing it, and to add more, would get to busy and take away from the focal point. That's just my humble opinion.

Scoopie,
The eyes are what will make or break this kind of quilt. In fact, Lola Jenkins had us do both of our eyes BEFORE we did anything else. It was pretty amazing how it just looked like blobs of cloth until we added the eyes, then it became a person looking at you,,,
If you ever get the chance to take a workshop with Lola, Miss Bubbles, I would recommend doing it. She was on with Ricky and Alex, I'll look for that show number and post it when I find it
But for now,
Enjoy what ever you're working on,
Luann

First of all I want to thank everyone that's given me some feedback on my Princess art quilt. I've been at the beach most of the day, walking and collecting treasures.
I just came out of the studio where I pinned a darkish red rectangle going up from her shoulder to off set some of the background. It helped. I also added some thin rectangles along the left side. None of the colors that I put on we're necessarily what I will use, but I think the long span on the left edge and the broken up area on the right side were giving me some optical effect. I also put a smidge of cloth over the 'light spot' just down from her on the right.
She has sloping shoulders,,, down on the right. I think all of those have had a hand in making it look "off" to me.
So here's a black and white so that color doesn't take over.

And a monochromatic one

And for a color

Please remember that the colors aren't what I will end up using, especially the one that looks 'white' on the lower left in the first picture.
I think it is looking better

Yup! I agree....trick of the eye! Once the appliqué is on, I don't think it will bother you anymore! And, I can appreciate the work on the face, especially the eyes! I've just done that with my Hoffman Challenge quilt, so know it isn't easy. Great piece!

I agree with Marilyn, I think it's just a trick of the eye because of the horizontal line in the fabric. I wouldn't worry about it either. I think its a lovely piece.

From the picture it looks to me as if the top right corner is dropping a bit, but as others mention, that could be camera distortion. To be sure that it is visual colour balance, rather than actual measurement balance, you could try pinning it out square on a board and putting you ruler on it to check your angles etc. These videos by Sharon Schamber might be of help to get the idea of blocking the block square. here and here

Hard to tell on the PC, but I think it is the print pattern in the lower rt corner piece....there is a darker lateral line that
leads the eye downward right at the seam line with the green piece . Trick-y bit !!!! Not some thing you
see 'till it is sewn sometimes . I'd ignore it and go on !!

It's fabulous. Love the colour balance.

The camera angle can distort things. Your borders are all accurate but the centre green fabric seems to be where your problem may lie. This may just be the photo. It may be worth checking.

I'm off to look at your blog.
