One of many the amazing things about the Red and White exhibit was the response from all ages, genders and of course the "non quilters". It came to my attention that there were many folks who were "dragged along" to experience this incredible display - only to be knocked out by the total experience. But what caught my eye was a little girl (Penelope) - who was intently sketching plans for her first quilt! We need to learn from Penelope and always have a pencil in hand just in case inspiration strikes - Care to guess the pattern?

Here are three happy women at the Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts exhibit in NYC getting ready for their Quilt Conversation where they are to discuss current topics in quilting. Although it was a red & white exhibit, black and white seemed to be the theme for the photo. (Alex, Paula Nadelstern, and Meg Cox.)

Here are the same three women after their Conversation, which included topics from the price of fabric, to how to attract younger quilters.  Looking happier than ever now!

You never think you are going to run across a full-blown quilt exhibit inside of the shop, but that's what happened recently during a visit to QuiltWorks in Bend, Oregon, owned by Marilyn Ulrich.  Upstairs in the shop, there was a wonderful exhibit of quilts by Tonye Belinda Phillips, author of Hand-Appliqued Quilts, Whimsical Designs & Simple Techniques.

Tonye is a quilt designer who lives in Camp Sherman, Oregon.  She also maintains a studio in Sisters just a few blocks away from the Stitchin' Post quilt shop.  Her greatest love is needle-turn applique and hand quilting which you'll find in most of her quilts.  Tonye often collaborates with the painter Kathy Deggendorfer and their artwork can be found in the High Desert Gallery in Bend.

Take a few minutes to enjoy the folk-art quilts full of applique flowers and eclectic array of fabrics.  And remember, always have your camera with you.  You never know what you might find.

Recently at the 2011 Biennial Quilt Expo of Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild of Greater St. Louis there were three fabulous TQS BOM quilts.  They were all examples of the Stars for a New Day pattern from 2009.

The quilts are "Kaffe-inated" by Mary Ellen Adams (adamsme), "My Orion" by Jeannette Larson (marbles), and "Stars for a New Day" by me (NancyinSTL).  All three of these quilts were longarm quilted by the same quilter, Sandi Wagner (Oh2Quilt) of SewFine Machine Quilting LLC.

Each quilt, while similar in pattern, is unique from the coloration of the fabric, to the settings, to the stunning machine quilting by Sandi.  Imagine being able to quilt the same quilt, three different ways.  Are you ready to finish up your TQS BOM?  Soak up the all the designs and see what you can do!

A huge Thank You to Nancy Hamilton for the photographs.
