3836_a_gift_of_quilts.jpgSharon Garrick of Harnham, England and Jenny Rundle of Anodver, England suggested that every team in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London receive a handmade commemorative quilt.  This project, A Gift of Quilts, has now officially become part of the Cultural Olympiad.  They were hoping to receive 500 quilts and as of today they have reached their goal with contributors ranging in age from 7 to 87.  An exhibition of A Gift of Quilts will be held at the Stitch & Craft Show at Olympia II, London, in March 2012.

Sharon talks with 18-year old pattern designer, Doug Leko, of Antler Quilt Design.  Doug started quilting in 1998. In 2006 his mother opened a quilt shop and he began to learn everything he could about quilting.  He offered to test patterns for pattern designers that came into the shop and it gave him the chance to practice his quilting. Doug says, "I'll be forever appreciative of the opportunities they entrusted me with."

There are so many great books out there to enjoy, both quiltie related and non quilte related. Recently I received a preview issue of Clare O'Donohues latest Someday Quilts mystery, The Devil's Puzzle.  It is not on the shelves yet. A fun read! Currently I am working on House Rules by Jodi Piccult and I am almost finished. What next, what next, I wonder.....  Now I am seeking your advice - What was the last "I can't put it down" book that you have read?

This week's puzzle was created by Ida W. Beck between 1952 and 1954.  Ida Beck was a shut-in and did needlework and monogramming, which was her speciality.  She spent several years planning and making the Rainbow Monogram and Initial quilt.

In the center of the quilt is a fully entwined alphabet monogram which is 14" x 24".  There are 9 other alphabets in different scripts and fonts included on the quilt.  Each of the scalloped border sections is a month of the year along with its gemstone,  holiday, and flower.  There are approximately 400 letters, 50 flowers and a dazzling array of birds and butterflies which are worked in embroidery or button-hole stitch applique.  It is handquilted with feathers, diamonds, and diagonal lines.  The quilt measures 94" x 90" and is in the collection of the Shelburne Museum.

The Hoffman Challenge was started in 1988 by Hoffmann Fabrics, and has become quite a quilt, clothing, and doll exhibition.  In its 24th year, the Challenge which began with 94 entries, has grown to over 700 entries from all over the world. Each year the top entries are grouped into traveling exhibits. These are just a few of the entries that could be found at the Denver Quilt Festival. To see the exhibit schedule, click here.

Carol Moellers made a wonderful smilebox of the Machine Quilters Showcase 2011 show recently held in Overland Park, Kansas.  You'll see great examples of quilting on some of the TQS BOMs, as well as, a few quilts from some of our TQS Members.  This was Carol's first year at the show and she didn't come home empty handed, she bought herself a Gammill Vision 22"!  To learn more about Carol, visit her TQS Member Spotlight.

Thanks for sharing, Carol!

I am always amazed at what gets my creative spirit going. Recently it has been the luster of dupioni silks - Though a little tricky to work with (copping more than a little attitude) it still continues to call my name - However, I am a fickle girl and can be persuaded in many directions - Do YOU have any other cool ideas to tempt and tease my creative jive? After all we have a three day weekend in the works!

Hey Everybody - and thanks for your thoughts and prayers during my recent illness. I'm happy to report that I'm doing much better after almost 12 days of bed rest and meds. I'm up and about but trying not to overdo it. You know how well that works for me! Haha.

I know within the TQS community there are many of you who have faced, or are facing, health issues. If laughter is the best medicine, then I hope you will find lots of it within and around you. As a matter of fact, the person who made me laugh the most for her caption (see below) is JMHUNT. Some Ricky Tims hand-dyed fabric is on it's way to her. Thanks to everyone who gave me a chuckle during my long, torturous ride back to Colorado.

Caption: In a balloon over Alex's head, she's singing a song (badly!), in balloon over Ricky's head, "Would Alex notice if I made for that exit?", and in a balloon over Libby's head, "OK now Libby, don't laugh, don't laugh, don't laugh....". Get well! JMHUNT

The Thread Sketching and Thread Painting of the Pumpkin pattern are great practice in learning these skills.  You will be amazed at how you will use these techniques in your future quilts and wall hangings.
