Quilt artist and teacher Lola Jenkins came to quilting in a unique fashion - a quilting magazine literally fell at her feet in a hobby store! - and she began teaching just a few months later. You're in for a special treat as she visits TQS with a show and tell of her vibrant and personal quilts, many of which are "portraits" of people she knows or has been commissioned to interpret in fabric.

Lola also demonstrates how to use the various elements in a printed fabric panel to build a fantasy collage quilt, and engages in a lively Q&A session with the audience. Then Ricky shares his Caveman technique.

If you are going to be in San Francisco before the end of the month, you still have time to see this wonderful exhibit, Primal Green. According to the SF Public Library, "These art quilts, created by members of the group Contemporary Quilt and Fiber Artists, range from very small to very large and reveal each artist’s unique approach to thinking about the environment."  Anyone catch it yet?

Our current guest in Episode 901 State-of-the-Art Quilting: Tradition Meets Innovation - Susan Brubaker Knapp, has a delightful block of the month pattern entitled, Heart's Desire.  It is Susan's take on a Baltimore Album quilt and finishes at 62" x 62"  It has a modern twist and features hearts, vines, and leaves.  Susan used hand-dyed fabrics, but image what this would look like on a white background using prints or batiks.  The pattern is available at Susan's site.

Hey everyone! Ricky here.

I'm curating an exhibition of improvisational quilts to be displayed at Road to California 2012. Anyone wishing to submit a quilt for this exhibit is welcome to do so providing the work is an improvisational design. Deadline for submitting is September 30, 2011.

What is an improvisational quilt? Any quilt that is started without a predetermined pattern or plan and evolves throughout the construction process. Each quilt in this exhibition should have emerged from the seed of an idea without fully knowing what the finished piece would look like. Sixteen to Twenty quilts will be chosen for the exhibit, depending on size. There is maximum of two submissions per person and submissions are free of charge.

This is not a competition. The quilts that are selected will not be judged. A Certificate of Exhibition will be awarded to each quilt chosen for display. This is a one-time, special exhibit highlighting the best of the best from "free-spirits" quilters around the world.

Whoo-hoo! Where will inspiration take you?

The pineapple has long been a symbol of gracious hospitality and sharing.  Did you know that there about as many varieties of pineapple from around the world as there are varieties of pineapple quilts?

A trip to the Dole Plantation on Oahu (about a 40-minute drive from Waikiki) inspired this slideshow of pineapples and their quilty counterparts...pineapple quilts from our very own TQS members, that we'd like to share with you.

To learn more about these quilts, go the Quilt Gallery and do a search by the TQS member's screen name (shown on each slide).
