Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson and Libby Lehman eductate, entertain and inspire.

The Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Asheville, North Carolina concluded yesterday. A big thanks to the Asheville Quilt Guild for providing all the volunteers for this event and a shout out to Bernina USA for their continued support. The Asheville Cotton Co. (Bernina dealer) was on site and new Bernina sewing machines went home with several quilters who took advantage of the dreat deals that were offered. The Ricky Tims Whoo-hoo Nation grew by about 470 with students coming from several states! And, most of them are heading home with new hand-dyed fabric, books, CDs and DVDs to add to their collection!

You know, you only have to shout out "whoo-hoo" to officially be part of Ricky's Whoo-hoo Nation. If you haven't done so, leave your whoo-hoo comment and make it official now!

One student found a new way to audition fabric before purchasing.

4144_chantelleshalom3.jpgIn Episode 902: When Serendipity Strikes: Portrait of a Quiltmaker featuring Lola Jenkins, Ricky demonstrated his method for improvisational piecing and created a Chantelle tulip quilt.

Now, One Lucky Winner will win the Chantelle-Shalom quilt that Ricky created in that show.

It's easy. Just email to Chantelle@thequiltshow.com (copy and paste into your address bar if it's not automatic) and put "Chantelle" in the subject line.

Then, in your e-mail, tell us why Ricky calls it his "Chantelle" quilt. If you don't know the answer, you can watch the episode and find out.

One name will be drawn randomly from those entries with the correct answer.  You must be a TQS member to participate.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, enter today!

One entry per person. The contest ends Friday, September 30, 2011 at Midnight.

Our members have been talking about this new series from Executive Producer Shelly Zegart.  This 9 part series examines quilting in a whole new way.

The entire series is available on DVD directly from Why Quilts Matter  (www.whyquiltsmatter.org).  The DVD (in NTSC format) includes bonus features not available through the series. In addition you can access an Image Resource Guide through their website, which contains information about the quilts and images seen in each episode.

Here's what the Why Quilts Matter website has to say about the episode, "Quilt Marketplace."

The marketplace for quilts has always been a bit of a mystery.  It’s hard to understand why some quilts are so much pricier than others, and why some old quilts aren’t worth anything at all.  And how can an artist ask $10,000 for a brand new quilt…and get it?  In this episode of Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics, host Shelly Zegart takes you behind the scenes in the quilt marketplace—past and present—where you will meet its players, learn its unwritten rules, and penetrate its secrets.  Discover why one 19th-century quilt was worth $264,000 and how a quilt can go from $150 to $20,000 as it passes from picker to dealer, up the ladder of expertise.  Find out how artists price their quilts in the contemporary market and how technology is changing the playing field forever.
