4672_inbox.jpgHot off the press from The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky:

The National Quilt Museum is pleased to announce the newest exhibit, acCENT! Art Quilts of the United Kingdom. The exhibit features quilts made by some of the most respected contemporary fiber artists in the United Kingdom. On exhibit for the first time in the United States, this exceptional exhibit has already gained acclaim in Europe.

These stunning and innovative quilts encompass a diverse range of topics. Some of the pieces address serious issues in the United Kingdom including politics, crime, health concerns, and the role of the police force in society. In contrast, some of the other quilts on exhibit are much more abstract. "More than anything, the styles, techniques, and materials used will challenge American audiences. For example, a quilt in the exhibit entitled Inspiration, by Becky Knight, is predominantly made out of newspaper clippings," Museum CEO Frank Bennett remarked. "We are very excited to get this exhibit. It really shows how diverse cultural influences impact artists." acCENT! Art Quilts of the UK will be on exhibit at The National Quilt Museum from March 16 to June 12, 2012.

Here's a quilt with plenty of color from Michelle Jackson. Here's what Michelle says about the quilt, "Adobe Sun Dance depicts an old adobe at Sky City on the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico as the late afternoon sun dances through viegas onto the exposed adobe bricks. This dance is emphasized here through the unusual use of color. I worked around the color wheel starting with violet at the top and ending with yellow-green at the bottom. Notice how the sunlight color becomes the compliment of the color of the surrounding adobes."

The quilt is 40" x 32 and is made from 100% cotton fabrics using fused applique.  It has been shown at A World of Beauty 2006, PIQF 2008 and NM Fabrications, State Capital Rotunda Gallery, Santa Fe, NM.

Don't forget to head on over to Michelle's TQS Classroom beginning March 27, 2012 to see her lessons on color.

Spring has officially arrived, although in some parts of the world it's not that clear.  In any case, what are you doing to celebrate Spring?  Are you doing some Spring cleaning in your sewing room?  Has a case of fabric been sent off to a charity?  Have those orphan quilt blocks found their way into a philanthropy quilt?  Or have you just decided to start something new?  Let us know, what's new for Spring.

The Visions Art Museum presents art quilts, fiber, and textile exhibitions throughout the year at the NTC Promenade, the arts and culture district of Liberty Station in San Diego, California.

Recyled Circles is a fabric class presented by Jane LaFazio who wrote about this technique in "Cloth Paper Scissors" magazine in March 2009.

In the class you'll learn to create a unique art quilt from your cloth scraps. It is a wonderful class for beginners and a great introduction to art quilting.

Class will be held on Monday, April 9th from 9am-4pm. The cost is $100.

Advance registration is required, call the museum at 619-546-4872. To learn more, click here.

OK - we know this is a quilting site - BUT...sometimes you just have to celebrate new beginnings - Lev Anderson  (Lev means heart in Hebrew) was born in the middle of the night to proud parents Joey and Shelly. Weighing in at 8 pounds 1 ounce - she is healthy, happy and sure to turn our world upside down!

Help Karen find her quilts.

From Karen Combs:

On March 16, 2012, sometime between midnight and 6am at the Courtyard New Braunfels River Village, my rental car's driver window was broken and my teaching suitcase was stolen. The hotel is located at 750 IH 35 North in New Braunfels, Texas. The police were called, they stated the break-in looked like the work of a professional.

It was a "smash and grab". The vandals did not know what they were taking and it will have no value to them. It means the world to me. . .

Inside the suitcase were the quilts from my popular Patchwork Illusions class. I also lost all my teaching supplies and step-by-step demos for the class.

If you live in New Braunfels or anywhere in Texas, please check local yard sales, flea markets and pawn shops for the quilts. Everyone, please forward this blog posting to every quilter and quilt shop you know and ask them to forward it to everyone they know.

If you find one of my quilts or quilt blocks, please contact me at karen@karencombs.com.
