Collecting Treasures: Celebrating 35 Years

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles-the first in the United States to focus exclusively on quilts and textiles-commemorates its thirty-five year anniversary with a large survey exhibition, Collecting Treasures: Celebrating 35 Years. Drawn exclusively from their permanent collection, it showcases important early and historic quilts, recent acquisitions of contemporary fiber art, as well as ethnic costume and textiles.

For more information regarding the exhibit, click here.

Highlights of the exhibit include:

  • The first quilt accessioned into the collection (a Crazy Quilt, 1883-1884).
  • A quilt by the wife of Francis Scott Key, author of "The Star Spangled Banner" (Grandmother's Flower Garden by Mary Tayloe Lloyd Key).
  • A woven piece with a poignant message on the Gulf War but applicable to today's ongoing conflicts (Weep for the World, 1991 by Mary Balzer Buskirk)
  • Drawing on the presidential election theme, a quilt with humorous caricatures of forty-two presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush (Presidents, by Dorothy Vance)
  • A never-before-exhibited, oversized ritual dance costume from the Yoruba people of West Africa (The Egungun Ceremonial Garment).
  • A contemporary ritual textile inspired by traditional Japanese by Yvonne Porcella (Firebird Kimono).

We just had to bring her back! Alex and Ricky head off to Main Street Quilting Company in Bozeman, MT, to rendezvous with popular quilt artist, teacher, and author Edyta Sitar, whose TQS Half-Square-Triangle Exchange was a rousing, worldwide success.

This time around, Edyta unveils her latest work, demonstrates an ingenious flip-and stitch method for creating eight-pointed stars (learned from Grandma Sitar), and shares some clever tricks for dressing up those star points. Great ideas for enhancing pieced work with appliqué, a bevy of helpful pressing tips, and a video tour of Edyta's barn-turned studio round out this jam-packed show.

Watch for a contest and not one, but two great new "Edyta projects" on the TQS website.

Here is another very creative ruler from Creative Grids®.  This is the Trapezoid Strip Ruler designed by Rachel Cross.

Use the straight side of this single strip ruler to cut 2 1/2" strips – or use the pre-cuts that are on the market. Turn-a-Round the ruler to cut trapezoids that finish 6". Place two strips of fabric – right sides together – and cut 3 pair of trapezoids at one time without wasting any fabric. The holes in the ruler enable the rotary cutter to cut the triangles without damaging the ruler. Our exclusive embedded gripper dots hold the fabric while cutting when pressure is applied.

If you like "braided quilts," you might enjoy French Braid Obsession, French Braid Quilts, or French Braid Transformation all from Jane Hardy Miller, published by C&T Publishing.
