Aging gracefully has become a mantra of sorts for me in the past year or so. I want to age gracefully. I think about it all the time. I think it is something that I have to actively work on. I have to work on  accepting the inevitable aging process. But I also have to work to take good care of this aging vessel. That means getting those pesky doctor's check-ups and lab work done. And then addressing the things that I can work to improve.

The latest thing I've been doing is going to physical therapy a couple times a week for a badly damaged arthritic knee. As the doctor said, "our goal is to keep you from needing knee replacement surgery until you are 65." Because they only last 15 years. Oh joy. But you know what? I am taking this seriously, doing all the exercises as well as I can, and doing them at home in-between appointments. And my knees really have improved.

In addition, I am taking seriously the doctor's suggestion that losing some weight will also help. I already make healthy choices for the majority of my meals, but now I am paring back some of my favorite recipes to just the 'bare bones.' Click here for a new version of my favorite blueberry scone recipe, pared down to just the essentials of a scone. It is still a very enjoyable treat for breakfast, and only 155 calories each. I made a batch of raspberry scones using this recipe as a Christmas treat.

Themes & Variations in Judy Martin's Quilts - Opening December 12, 2012 and running through March 11, 2013 at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY.

Judy Martin designs and pieces original quilts that are clearly influenced by traditional quilts but she also takes inspiration from her own previous quilts, with specific themes weaving through her work. Some of these themes were subjects of her books first, and they became enduring interests and hallmarks of her style.

Sometimes simple is best. Here is a guy and his piano, nothing more. This video was recorded live in 2007. The piano is the one he often mentions in his lectures that went through the 1979 Wichita Falls, TX tornado - and still has the scars to prove it. Ricky performs his arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High from his 2002 Christmastime CD. Purchase the CD.

Join us in Episode 906 when TQS returns to the beautiful Monument, CO, home of Hugh and Dee Dee Eaton with none other than the renowned art quilter, author, and teacher, Katie Pasquini Masopust. After touching on the high points of her quilting journey, and sharing some of her amazing work, she puts Alex to work on a design exercise that begins with a "no-peeking" sketch drawn to the accompaniment of classical music. (You definitely will want to try this at home!)

Katie then shows how to work with the results to create an original quilt design. In addition, Ricky demonstrates the "Flip and Sew" technique on a variation of the Drunkard's Path/Fan block.

If that’s not enough, Judy also offers valuable pointers on what judges look for in a quilt when judging a quilt show. This not-to-be-missed episode was shot on location at the beautiful Wente Winery in Northern California, and also features a brief winery tour, a lovely redwork pattern featuring grapes, vines, and leaves, and Ricky singing opera... in a cave!
