Dollmaker, mixed-media artist, and TQS classroom teacher Lauren Vlcek enjoys combining her various talents to create one-of-a-kind mixed-media pieces. In this info-packed show, Lauren demonstrates how she uses her deconstructed crazy-quilt technique to make a small wall shrine, sharing tons of tips for fabric selection, pressing, decorative machine stitching, and embellishment along the way. She also shows how to insert a reverse-appliqué "window frame" in a pieced block background, and a variety of ways to employ the results. But that's not all: Ricky also shares tips for working with guild exchange blocks, and offers a few potential block suggestions (available on the TQS website).

Episode 1206 - The Magical World of Mixed Media debuts on Monday, March 11.

This week's puzzle is a bit of a departure.  It is actually the cover of a scissor and needle case created by TQS Guest and Teacher, Lauren Vlcek.

You can watch Lauren in Episode 1206: The Magical World of Mixed Media debuting on Monday, March 11, 2013.

You learn about embellishment in Lauren's classroom, Fabric Fancification.

This contemporary scissor and needle case features an original print on canvas of a painting I did of Frida Kahlo. The case measures 6 inches by 6 inches when closed. It opens to 6 inches by 15 1/2 inches and utilizes 2 magnetic snap closures. The needle pages are made of wool felt. The fabrics on the interior and exterior of the case are modern 100% quilting weight cotton supported by 2 kinds of interfacing for a sturdy hand. Recent guest, Sue Rasmussen, visited the See How We Sew blog and created a two-part guest post.  In part one (posted March 5), Sue created a tutorial for making curved pieced blocks and landscapes.

In part two (posted March 8) there is a "virtual quilt show" featuring Sue's quilts.

Take a look and be informed and inspired! (Also, there is a special gift for you.)

Or, have some fun with puzzles of Sue's quilts: Woodland Doe and No Room for Tires.
