Despite wartime hardships and shortages, American women (and men) continued to make quilts throughout the Civil War. If you're in the area, you won't want to miss the exhibit of historic, Civil War-era quilts from the Arlan & Pat Christ collection on display at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY, through October 30. It's like stepping back in time to a critical period in our nation's history.

The Modern Quilt Guild has opened membership to guilds and individuals for the first time. The dues from members will help support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. By formalizing, the Modern Quilt Guild will be able to offer members educational programs, tools to run local guilds, 501(c)3 status for guilds and much more.

The Modern Quilt Guild will offer the following member benefits: access to the new online social media community, informative webinars, early-bird registration for conferences and events, discounts and special offers with Modern Quilt Guild sponsors, participation in fabric challenges and swaps, discounted rates on conferences, events, merchandise, quilt entry fees, legal fees, insurance and more.

"Being a member of the Modern Quilt Guild has given me a wonderful way to connect with quilters near and far who share a love of modern quilting. The Modern Quilt Guild has helped me grow immensely as a quilter. I'm so excited to see what's ahead in the next phase of growth for the MQG!" says Melissa Lytle, President of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild.

The Modern Quilt Guild is also launching an online community for members. The first online community built specifically for modern quilters, it will offer forums, photo and idea sharing, guild discussion boards, events and additional features to be developed over the next six months.

"I'm most excited about joining the Modern Quilt Guild for the community! The new website gives me a home where I can freely bounce around ideas with modern quilters all over the globe," says Rebecca Roach, Vice President of Communications of the Austin Modern Quilt Guild.

5823_libby_journal_caringbridge.jpgYou'll get a bit teary-eyed when you see what Libby's son created for her. He knows that she enjoys textures so he went back to her house and found a kit that Libby uses for her classes and put it together himself.  He then presented to her the "activity cloth" he made on her Bernina which included several embroidery stitches and material from her studio.  Libby was very moved by the gift. What a great guy!  To read the whole story, click here.

A little birdie told us that there are more than a few TQS members who have received notification that their quilts will be hanging in Houston.

If you are going to have one on display, toot your horn by submitting a comment so that we can look for it at the show.

Congratulations to you all!
