Do you know about FabMo?  It is an all-volunteer, donor supported organization that diverts beautiful designer materials (more than 50 tons in 2012) from their otherwise destination, the landfill, and makes them available for creative reuse by anyone interested.

Two great new fall exhibits are opening Oct. 3 at the Texas Quilt Museum.  "My Stars! A Constellation of Star Quilts, 1845-1993," and "Land of Enchantment: Art Quilts from New Mexico." The museum has been kind enough to offer our TQS member a sneak peek of both exhibits.

The Museum's consulting curator, Sandra Sider, of New York, curated "My Stars!" and noted, "Quilt makers in the United States were captivated by star quilts in the early 19th century.  Their passion for working with these challenging, kaleidoscopic patterns continued into the 20th century, ranging from monumental Lone Star quilts to block quilts constructed in precise, repetitive grids that tested the skills of the most talented makers.  We invite you to savor the explosions of color and texture in this exhibition, which might just leave you "starry eyed!"

Betty Busby, of New Mexico, curated "Land of Enchantment," which contains 14 quilts created by fiber artists from that state.  All of the artists are also members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates.  Many of the themes and images in their quilts, which include both representational and abstract art, are reflective of the diverse aspects of New Mexico.

The fall exhibits will run through Dec. 22, when the Museum will close for the holidays, reopening on January 9 with its winter exhibits.

The museum is located at 140 W Colorado St, La Grange, TX 78945. If you are going to IQF Houston, it is about 1 1/2 drive to the museum.

Spirogyra #2 by Caryl Bryer Fallert was inspired by photo taken through a microscope of spirogyra, a single cell, filamentous algae, commonly known as pond scum.

This entire quilt is a study in intersecting color and value gradations. The four fabrics  are from Cryl's Gradations collection for Benartex. The dots are quilted in a pebbly pattern with heavy (#30) top stitching thread from the Superior Brytes collection. She matched the color of the background fabric behind each dot, so the pebbles appear to float. The wavy background stripes were quilted in matching colors (three shades of each color) with fine (#60) thread from the Superior Bottom Line collection.

Caryl used her Applipiecing technique to create the quilt. You can see photos of how she put this quilt together on her website, click here.

You can watch Caryl in Episode 1308 - Techniques, Tips...and a Very Special Tour for Quilters which debuts on October 7.

Susan says her quilt, Monochrome, has a little bit of everything.  It includes English hand smocking, fabric manipulation, foundation piecing, lace, and embroidery.   She even made the lampworked glass beads above the tassels.

Monochrome won 2nd place in the Computer-Aided Machine Embroidery category at the 2010 Houston International Quilt Festival, and an Honorable Mention at the 2010 AQS show in Paducah.
