MasterPieces: Quilts of Inspiration
June 13 - September 9, 2014

Master Pieces: Quilts of Inspiration is made up of extraordinary quilts from many of the most respected contemporary quilters. The majority of these quiltmakers began making quilts in the 1980s. These quilts are examples of the innovators works of our time. They are quilter's works that push the boundaries of the question we all have, "what makes a quilt, a quilt?" Every art form needs forward thinker, those who ask, "What if...?"

The quilts gathered together in this exhibit reflect this attitude. The exhibit was created to honor Meredith Schroeder's induction into the Quilter's Hall of Fame, as she, too, believes in the possibilities of quiltmaking.

We launch Series 1500 with a visit to the Texas studio of artist, instructor, and author Jane Dunnewold, well known for the one-of-a-kind fabrics she creates with printing, dyeing, resist, and other manipulations. In this episode, Jane discusses the meaning of surface design, and shows how she transfers a black-and-white copyright-free image to prepared for dye (PFD) silk, which she then embellishes with watercolor pencils and needle felting. You'll love our tour of her wet/dry studios, a delightful blend of old and new. Finally, Jane, who uses a hula hoop as a preventative for back problems, coaxes Alex and Ricky to give this childhood classic a try it. An informative - and fun - start to a new season!

Episode 1501: Discover Sensational Surface Design debuts July 7, 2014.

TQS Member, Sherrie Cahill (sherrie58) was inspired by a family photo of her father-in-law to create this quilt. Sherrie used raw-edge applique, hand painting, and thread painting to complete the image. It was machine quilted on a longarm. Tom & The Model T, Iowa 1924 received an Honorable mention at the 43rd Annual NQA Show in 2012.

Many readers of Leni Levenson Wiener's book, Photo-inspired Art Quilts, are not comfortable using the computer to create a “pattern” from which to make their art quilt using Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.  Now you can order that pattern from Leni.

Leni will make recommendations about cropping or adjusting your photo for the most impact. She will make whatever changes are needed and then create a pattern for you from your photo.
