An exquisitely-embroidered cloth of silver, found in Herefordshire, England, may be the remnants of a dress belonging to Queen Elizabeth I. It has been identified by experts as a 16th Century dress and may be the only known existing garment worn by the Queen. Click on Watch the Video to learn more.

A great deal of investigation has gone into proving whether it is a portion of Queen Elizabeth's dress...don't let this happen to one of your quilts, take the Quilt Alliance Labeling Pledge.

The nonprofit Quilt Alliance, dedicated to the vision of No Anonymous Quiltmakers, is on a mission to change your labeling habits! Only 58% of the 24,185 quiltmakers surveyed in the 2016 Quilters Survey said they regularly label their quilts. Click on Learn More to go the Quilt Alliance Labeling Pledge page. If you take the pledge and sign up for their newsletter you will also be entered into a drawing to win a set of custom-designed StoryPatches labels. The winner will receive 30 labels with their own personal design, plus a Pigma fabric pen. Each label includes a StoryPatch code, perfect for telling your quilt story. Work with the StoryPatches design team to create your perfect label!

Do you remember Katie Fowler? Yes, she's the one who cut up her finished quilt during a TQS Taping for her show while the audience watched in horror. Cutting up the quilt was part of her creative process.

Now she's got a great article about using a sketchbook to help you with your creativity.

Click on Learn More to read the article.

This last weekend was a perfect quilt retreat weekend...lots of non-stop snow, girlfriends, UFOs (Unfinished Objects) WIPs (Works in Progress) and PIGs (Projects in Grocery Sacks). Throw in some chocolate, coffee and Pita chips and it all equaled a wonderful weekend!

I look at retreats differently than workshops. Retreats are where you bring your own stack of projects and start stitching. Workshops are where you bring supplies for a specific project that everyone is working on. This past weekend was a retreat. The other added advantages to a retreat is in the safety of the "girlfriend circle." You get to solve the world's problems, vent about your job, share family news, educate each other in the benefits of shopping for quilting stuff while snowbound, and goals for the quilting life. On this particular retreat, there was an in-depth discussion about the difference between Hoarding vs. Necessary Accumulation. All of our parents were products of a much more frugal environment. They either grew up during the depression or fought and lived through a war where they learned to repair and reuse. None of them were hoarders and none of us are hoarders...the fabric, kits and supplies that we stockpile in our homes is not a form of quilt hoarding, but a learned behavior from our parents of "Necessary Accumulation" and one we should not feel ashamed of or worried about. And, although I do not stockpile cleaned styrofoam from the meat or veggie department, I do understand the necessary accumulation of fabric...someday there may be a shortage of fabric, and like money in the bank, I will be smug that I had the forethought to prepare.

On another note, the 3 Quilt Alongs that I have organized are Sunflower Gathering from Primitive Gatherings, Bring Home The Tree and Give Thanks from Buttermilk Basin. I also have several...as in SEVERAL UFOs and WIPs that I want to complete this year. I have set up a hashtag (#) for Instagram for anyone who wants to post their completed projects. When posting a photo to Instagram just type #2017quiltchallenge  #2017bomquiltchallenge #2017stitchchallenge with no spaces, even if it is only a quilt block...that way we can all see the progress and be encouraged by the baby steps toward a successful finish! Be sure to check into the Woolie Blog or Quilt Roadies to see my progress. Have a great stitching January!!!

Found this gem on Facebook. Could you match the colors...by eye, and then mix them by hand? Block printing, silk screens, and "science fiction" machinery, we've certainly come a long way.

Ricky is revisiting his past and bringing you something new.

"I’ve been finding inspiration by revisiting quilts that I designed and made many years ago — long before I ever thought about creating patterns or books. It’s like getting reacquainted with an old friend."

Stars and Stripes is one such quilt. Look closely at the blocks and you will see that the points of the stars are in the neighboring blocks, creating a nesting effect!"

3467_iphoto4.jpgHere's another beauty designed by Sue Garman as the 2008 TQS BOM. It's Bouquets for a New Day. Karen Powel has given her own authentic twist to this beautiful quilt. See Sue's original quilt below.

Will we find your quilt in Road to California next year?

The 2011 Biennial Quilt Expo of Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild of Greater St. Louis there were three fabulous TQS BOM quilts. They were all examples of the Stars for a New Day pattern created by Sue Garman in 2009.

The quilts are "Kaffe-inated" by Mary Ellen Adams (adamsme), "My Orion" by Jeannette Larson (marbles), and "Stars for a New Day" by me (NancyinSTL).  All three of these quilts were longarm quilted by the same quilter, Sandi Wagner (Oh2Quilt) of SewFine Machine Quilting LLC.

Each quilt, while similar in pattern, is unique from the coloration of the fabric, to the settings, to the stunning machine quilting by Sandi.  Imagine being able to quilt the same quilt, three different ways.  Are you ready to start your TQS BOM?  Soak up the all the designs and see what you can do!

A huge Thank You to Nancy Hamilton for the photographs.
