This month we highlight Laura Ingalls Wilder's 1894 journal when she, Almanzo, and Rose moved by covered wagon from burned-out South Dakota to the "Land of the Big Red Apple" in southwest Missouri. The little journal she kept was published just a few short years after she died in 1957 and is a fascinating account of sorrow and loss, hope and determination to rise above hard circumstances. Here is her observant eye along the trail: "We watered the teams at a public well with windmill, by the side of the road. The water is good all through McCook County [SD]. Wells are 120 feet deep on the average and nearly every well has a windmill.  This is a good county." ~ Laura Ingalls Wilder, On the Way Home; the Diary of a trip from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, July 20 entry. Harper & Row, 1962.

Here is the latest information regarding the Houston Quilt Festival - as of 8/30/2017:

Dear Friends of Quilt Festival,

First, we would like to think all who have sent messages of support to us in response to the devastating flooding taking place in our home city of Houston. We are happy to report that all of our staff is safe, and that our office did not suffer any damages.

Many others have not been so lucky, and we ask that you keep Houston and all areas that have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey in your thoughts, and, if possible, consider making a contribution toward organizations involved in the ongoing relief efforts.

We have also heard from many people asking whether they should cancel their plans to attend this year’s International Quilt Festival in Houston. We want to assure you that there is no reason to cancel any travel plans, as the show is still scheduled to go on.

The show is still over two months away, and we have full confidence that our city will bounce back quickly, as it has always done. Also, neither the George R. Brown Convention Center nor the Downtown Houston hotels were damaged in the flooding.

At this time, our office remains closed, and will until it is safe for our staff to return to work. We will post an announcement to our website and social media when the office reopens. In the meantime, we ask that you be patient in receiving a response to any calls or emails.

Once again, Quilt Festival in Houston is still scheduled to take place November 2-5 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. We hope you will plan to be there to support our amazing city and enjoy the show!

Thank you!

----------------

One more note...those who submitted quilts for our Houston shows are (understandably) concerned about their whereabouts. Please be assured that all of the quilts are in a secure and DRY location. This is always a top priority for us, and we take every possible measure to ensure their safety!

Here's a cute little back-to-school project from WeAllSew.com. And don’t think you need to be going back to school to make one for yourself! Everyone needs a nice pencil case to store all their goodies. This project makes a super sweet and thoughtful gift as well.

Here is another great quilt from the "500 Traditional Quilts" Exhibit in Houston 2014. Gabrielle Paquin's quilt, Double Étoile Plumetée, combines a fun star, fun fabrics, and a fun border for a different look.

G and I have been on the road 2 weeks and we continue to be in awe of the beautiful country we live in and the friendly spirit of not only the quilting community, but also the camping community.

In thinking about #3 of the 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Quilter, I realized it encompassed not only a practical aspect but an emotional one.
Quilting is not only a creative outlet but has a component of generosity. Interwoven in our creative outlet, we are making quilts for family, friends and charitable groups, and a lot of times with the best of intentions,...are not finishing them. And so #3 is...It Is Never Too Late!

What I mean about this is we all have projects that we intended to start or have started for a grandchild blankie and now they are going off to college. What about that graduation quilt...that still lingers? Or the wedding quilt, and the newlyweds are celebrating their 10th anniversary, LOL. Having these projects lurking in the sewing space creates an atmosphere of stress because I think these older designated projects actually have a voice of the ghost of projects never completed!!!

But!!! I am here to tell you...IT IS NEVER TOO LATE! Each one of these projects with a voice does not have to be created in the original pattern...you can morph it into another project...like a retirement quilt for that graduate, LOL. Why we hang onto projects as if they cannot evolve and grow as we do is beyond me...are we punishing ourselves? Give it up...set yourself free!

I know quilters are generally not just quilters...but they knit, cross stitch, needlepoint, rug hook, punchneedle...and so the old project list usually includes many other art forms. As an example...I bought this cross stitch to make for my youngest son.

...and now I have decided it is for his son!!! I can't tell you how amazing it is to release this project and set it free!

Have a wonderful week and set those projects free...it is never too late!

Ricky experienced the eclipse near the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. This is simply a video of the experience. The audio track is not edited at all - so it is entirely real time. There were two video cameras and still shots edited over the audio track.

One of the true quilting masters, the spatial illusions in Libby's quilts have intrigued and delighted audiences around the world. The National Quilt Museum has 16 of her amazing quilts in this once-in-a-lifetime must-see exhibit. It runs from July 14 - October 17, 2017 in Paducah.

“When I think of energy, color, pattern and movement, and ‘makin’ a joyful noise’ I think of Libby Lehman’s work... The magic that she creates with needle and thread is unparalleled, and has inspired legions of today’s quilters.”
--Michael F. James, University of Nebraska–Lincoln"

Star Members can watch Libby in Show 513 when she was our Quilting Legend 2009.

The museum also has a quick video about the exhibit. See below the photos. Click here for Libby's bio.
