We saw Kyouko Tashiro's quilt, In Early Summer, 79" x 79", at Paducah Spring 2017 in the Hand Quilted Quilts Category. It is beautiful in all aspects, but we were especially drawn to how the center medallion was created by the appliqué and how the circle of flowers and wavy quilting added movement to a square quilt. Do you get the same feeling?

Wednesday night, November 1st (7:30-10:00 pm) and Sunday, November 5 (2:00-4:00 pm).

Going to Quilt Festival in Houston this year? Can you spare two hours to volunteer with the Quilt Alliance booth? Bethanne writes about her quilt, October Sky:

This is the third in a series of silk dupioni quilts done in my pictographic quilting style.  I love everything about a Pennsylvania fall ... the colors, the smells, the harvest and all the busy critters.  With this quilt, I tried to capture that feeling using all original hand drawn motifs that are free-motion quilted.  The beaded details are tiny applique tubes individually stuffed with beads and hand tied off.  The center medallion and binding feature handmade beaded piping.  Derwent Inktese pencils were used on parts of the quilt to create shading.

Bethanne's quilt has won over 20 major awards including:

  • National Quilting Association Masterpiece Quilt, 2015
  • Master Award for Machine Artistry, Houston International Quilt Festival, 2016
  • Best of Show, AQS Quilt Week Des Moines, 2015
  • Best of Show, Medium Size, National Quilting Association Quilt Show, 2015
  • Best of Show, Machine Quilters Showcase, 2015

TQS received a very heartfelt message from Deborah McDonald in Nova Scotia. For the past 8 or 9 years she has kept busy turning donated wedding gowns and prom dresses into demise gowns for the IWK Children’s Hospital.
 
Deborah writes:
 
"I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I do a very unique thing for our local children's hospital the IWK in Halifax, I sew Demise gowns for infants who have passed away or who will soon pass away. I also make angle pockets for early trimester miscarriage for infants too small or fragile to dress. As you can image this is a very emotionally difficult job to do and I am the only person sewing them for the hospital. I have been sewing them now for about 8-9 years and have made too many to count. I am the only person sewing the gowns for the entire Atlantic provinces of Canada that includes, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick,, lots of  sewing to be done by just little old me.

They look like christening gowns but are very tiny as they fit infants from 1-3 pounds and I also make them to fit full term children. My story was picked up by the paper, the Chronicle Herald in Halifax  and also by our radio CBC and CBC international. "
 
Deborah is looking for donations of fabric and thread. She will take any and all thread colors and fabrics as she makes the tiny gowns in many colors. She says that any amount of thread or fabric is a help and very much appreciated. Her mailing address is:

Kaffe Fassett explains some of his thoughts behind his exhibition on color at the National Trust's Mottisfont Abbey. The exhibition will run from September 16, 2017 to January 14, 2018. They even let him paint the walls to have a different background. Take a look.

"Quilters Take Manhattan," put on for the last seven years by the Quilt Alliance, took its final bow this September. In the future, the Alliance will be focusing their efforts in other areas, including the Quilt Story Road Show:

"For the past seven years, we have proudly presented this Big Apple event featuring some of the quilt world's most talented and fascinating speakers. We raised important operating funds and signed on many enthusiastic new members. We're so excited to take this celebration of quilts, stories and friends to new communities starting in 2018, our 25th anniversary year.


Quilt Story Road Show, our new education and outreach program inspired by QTM, will be offered for a fee to guilds, groups, museums, quilt shows, exhibitions, shops, businesses and communities across the U.S. who want to document, preserve and share the stories of quilts and quiltmakers in their community. These one to two day events will demonstrate and offer hands-on training in oral history, quilt labeling, and other ways to ensure that quilts and their stories do not fade away.
