Gail Garber has created an original quilt for TQS, Thunderbirds Rising. She writes, When Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson asked my to be on The Quilt Show, I immediately knew that I wanted to create something special for the show.

This medallion style quilt features new techniques, and measures 58″ x 58″, the perfect size for a dramatic wall quilt.  I have long been fascinated by our feathered friends and, living in the Southwest, the Thunderbird design is prominent in various art forms.  And, I have a new passion for checkerboard designs with their strong graphics in contrasting colors.

Noriko Nozawa's quilt, Field Sketch-Cornflower, almost looks like a tapestry with her use of appliqué, embroidery, and unique fabrics. Her use of digitized embroidery will make you wonder how she did it.

We remember walking down the aisle of quilts and stopping at this quilt because the colors caught our attention. Cheryl Olson's quilt, Ananda at Last, brings back the beautiful colors that surround us in Fall. Take a look outside. Alex did and it reminded her of this quilt.

Along with being a Quilt teacher and Author, Gail is the founder of Hawks Aloft, a rescue organization that cares for and educates the public about birds of prey that can no longer live in the wild due to injuries. Gail brought along three owls to visit the studio. They watched as she shared her method of using a flexible curve ruler, a pencil, and freezer paper to create a free-form drawing for making curved flying geese. She also has tips for eliminating waste when foundation paper piecing and for removing the foundation paper.

Also in this show, Ricky was in Paducah when an antique quilt caught his attention. The quilt featured a variation on an Irish Chain. He breaks down that quilt into workable strip sets and creates an updated contemporary version.

Star Members can watch Gail and her owls in Show 2111: Working with Curved Flying Geese and Foundation Paper Piecing & Creating a Contemporary Antique Quilt when it debuts Sunday, November 19, 2017.
