Alex and Ricky are visited by Maria Shell, who refers to herself as a "bit maker." She shares her method for creating visually vibrant and patterned quilts created by sewing small units or strips together. It is through sewing, cutting, and joining a large number of strip set units, that Maria pushes a design as far as she can, with the end result being an entirely new design.

Also in this show, Alex shares her updated version of an antique quilt and discusses the problems she encountered when trying to mimic the original quilt‘s border. Using lemons to make lemonade, Alex shares her new "super improv" and out-of-the-box triangle border.

Star Members can watch Maria in Show 2208: Improv Patchwork. The show debuts this Sunday, April 8, 2018.

Before we start this craziness, I want to answer a question from last week's post. The Eiffel Tower cross stitch is by Jardin Privé (France), the two Redwork embroideries are by Bird Brain Designs, and I can't remember who the other cross stitch is by, but I got it from Acorn n' Threads in Portland, Oregon...so give them a call :) What can I say, right now there is sheer chaos in our lives...family moving, road trips being planned, deadlines for quilts and projects to be done. I don't know about you, when life seems out of control I go to my happy place. But, if your project list is as long as mine and you know who you are...the UFO (unfinished objects), WIP (Work in Progress), PIGs (projects in grocery sacks) can add a whole other layer of stress.

And so...I have been a bit quiet...thinking...and, I came up with a solution (crazy I know) and that is to start an entirely new project!!! Sometimes you need to stop looking at the same old projects that are moving along at a snails pace and freshen up the view. Kind of like taking a vacation and seeing new sights! You always come home refreshed and ready to pick up where you left off.

Here is where I need your help!!! I want to take the stress out of choosing a project by letting you decide for me!!! I am soooo laughing out loud right now. I am ready to be free from the decision and will start whichever project gets the most votes!

1. The Rainy Day Quilt by Laundry Basket Quilts?

2. White Christmas by Farmhouse Threads

3. Just a Buzz n by Crane Designs

I am counting on you to help me out...I will post the winner next week and talk about my process...and, Thank You!

Marilyn Badger's Award-winning quilt, Pinball Wizard, evolved from a class taken by Gail Garber on drafting star blocks. Working with off-center stars and a love of embellishment brought her a 1st Place ribbon at Road to California.

(Here at TQS, Gail can be seen teaching curved flying geese and foundation paper piecing in Show 2111.)

Winner of $1,000.00 for 1st Place: Traditional, Large, Pieced - Road to California 2017

Started in 2013, Finished in 2016

Design basis: Original

Artist statement: This quilt evolved from a class taken by Gail Garber on drafting star blocks. I loved the idea of the off-center stars and wanted to use some beautiful silk fabrics my friend Beth Nufer gave me one year at Road. I love embellishing and had a great time in Madison, Wisconsin during Quilt Expo visiting bead shops in the area to find things that would carry out the theme. Appropriately named by my friend Linda Naughton from Duluth, MN.

Alex took a machine quilting class from Jenny K. Lyon at Craft Napa. Jenny brought a wonderful quilt, Morning Breeze, demonstrating all kinds of quilting designs. It had everything from feathers to flowers and presented as a beautiful whole cloth quilt. This one will get you motivated to find those quilt sandwiches and start practicing.

Look below the photos to see what Alex had to say about the class.

Here's what Alex had to say about the class:

Imagine spending the whole day sitting in front of a BERNINA special edition 765 Rose Gold machine stitching away to your hearts content. Jenny had a plethora of tricks up her sleeves to help students grow their confidence at free motion quilting. I learned I LOVE bubble quilting and how easy it is to try different motifs with just a little practice. Practice, Practice, Practice! That is the name of the game.

P.S. - Alex bought the 765 Rose Gold and took it home with her...
