Marilyn Badger's Award-winning quilt, Pinball Wizard, evolved from a class taken by Gail Garber on drafting star blocks. Working with off-center stars and a love of embellishment brought her a 1st Place ribbon at Road to California.

(Here at TQS, Gail can be seen teaching curved flying geese and foundation paper piecing in Show 2111.)

Winner of $1,000.00 for 1st Place: Traditional, Large, Pieced - Road to California 2017

Started in 2013, Finished in 2016

Design basis: Original

Artist statement: This quilt evolved from a class taken by Gail Garber on drafting star blocks. I loved the idea of the off-center stars and wanted to use some beautiful silk fabrics my friend Beth Nufer gave me one year at Road. I love embellishing and had a great time in Madison, Wisconsin during Quilt Expo visiting bead shops in the area to find things that would carry out the theme. Appropriately named by my friend Linda Naughton from Duluth, MN.

I love this quilt. And I love Gail Garber, one of the best teachers ever. I can see her methods here. The quilting is also exquisite!

The colors almost come alive because of the illusion of movement that the off centerness gives it. Its like looking at a fantastic circus.

Marilyn achieved great depth in this quilt with her color placement.
