March 2019 Update:

Muttons & Buttons & Pearls, Oh My! won Best Stationary Machine Quilting at AQS Lancaster 2019.

--------------------------------

It just wouldn't be a quilt show without an entry from TQS favorite Janet Stone. Janet's quilt, Muttons & Buttons & Pearls, Oh My!, took its inspiration from an antique woven coverlet. Find out how she overcame a huge problem to create a more beautiful quilt. Let's just say her cat was involved...

Janet's quilt was exhibited at the Pacific International Quilt Festival 2018 and won 3rd Place Traditional.

Debra Goley created Taking Flight: My Great Aunts for the HERstory: A Celebration of Strong Women exhibit. Her aunts both served in WW II as pilots and are both still living. That's one of them in the video with Debra. Debra talks about her quilt and we salute the women she commemorated.

Her two aunts are Betty Heinrich Berkstresser and Barbara Willis Heinrich.

Deb writes,

Here is my highlight! Getting to celebrate with my Aunt, Betty Heinrich Berkstresser, a WWII veteran, a Women Air Force Pilot was the best treat! I was honored to show her my art work of her and my other great Aunt both still living! Only 83 of the 1000 WASPS still alive and both my Aunts received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2011. People came up to thank them for their service and my tears were of joy.

While the colors are vibrant and help the quilt tell a story, the visual impact of the quilt had people stopping and staring. It made you feel like you were looking through a pipeline in the ocean. Thom Atkins quilt, Water is Life, So Why are We Doing This, is a commentary on what we are doing to our oceans. That's why he used interesting embellishments, including distressed plastic, to create something that was "Beautiful" and "Terrifying".

Thom's quilt won Best Use of Color and 2nd Place Visual Impact (New Quilts of Northern California) at PIQF 2018.
