Title of Quilt: A Little Blue
Quilter's Name: Mayleen Vinson
Location: Haysville, Kansas, USA
Alike but different, that’s how I’d describe my IMQE exchange partner, Judy Garden, and myself. We both like traditional quilting and are starting to learn more about new techniques in art quilting. However, we are different in our color preferences. I love color, especially red, and use as many fabrics as possible in a quilt. Judy likes two color quilts, blue and white is her favorite color combination. I rarely use blue and she rarely uses red. We agreed to make a miniature medallion quilt for the exchange in each other’s favorite color. Restricting myself to two colors was a challenge but also a great learning experience about value and monochromatic colors. I did include other colors for some of the tulips so I guess I bent the rules a bit! I enjoyed learning about Judy’s lifestyle which is different than mine. She lives near a lake, I live in a more rural area currently in a drought. She’s accomplished many things in her life, I’m a homebody. Even though we’re different, we share a love of quilting that allowed us to connect and share our happy and sad times. During the construction of Judy’s quilt, I thought about her likes and dislikes. Will she like this blue? Is the quilt too scrappy? I was concerned about my lack of machine quilting skills. In the end, I realized that the meaning of the quilting process and the generosity of the resulting quilt is a gift between friends.
Title of Quilt: Kansas Spring
Quilter's Name: Judy Garden
Location: Cobourg, Ontario, Canada
What a great year it’s been. From the first trickles of information about an international miniature quilt exchange, through ups and downs in the lives of our team mates, we come to the finish line. Mayleen and I turned out to be kindred spirits in our love of quilting and appliqué. Emails back and forth determined that we would each work in the favourite colours of our team mate. We wanted appliqué, pieced blocks, and a centre medallion. My quilt had many interpretations regarding the centre medallion and the finished one is the fifth attempt. It was all about balance between the little pieced blocks and the appliqué itself. Over the next few months we learned about our lives and the challenges that we faced in meeting deadlines (whether quilt related or not), choosing designs and colours in keeping with our original goal, family matters, weather, and information about the towns we live in. I know I’ve made a friend and we will keep in touch long after our little quilts are hanging in our homes.

These shoes were made for walking. This quilt was made in a class Alex took from Susan Carlson at Asilomar (Star Members can watch Susan here in Show 801: "Painting" With Fabric - Free-Style Quilts). The quilt celebrates her first tennis shoes. Look under the photo for a quick slideshow on the development of the quilt.
